Mary Astor was a big star in her day, from silent movies and into the talkies.
She had a couple of big scandals during her time.
One when her diary was leaked during a divorce, I think it showed she had an affair with G.S. Kaufman.
Another was when she was supposed to be involved in hanky-panky in a movie theater balcony.
That one was out of Confidentail Magazine.
My memory is that she went to court against the magazine and won her case.

The movie The Big Sleep was had a somewhat tough plot to follow.
There are several scenes where if you look close, you can see that the actors mouths do not line up with the words you hear.
One of these scenes is with Bogart and Bacall when she is in his office sitting on his desk and scratching her leg.
This is due to that fact that after filming was over the director, Howard Hawks, realized that even he could not follow the plot.
The dialog changes were made to help make the plot more clear.
The acting is so good in this flick that even if all the loose ends don't make sense, you don't notice or don't care.
Also, Lauren Bacall was under personal contract to Howard Hawks.

You may already know all this stuff, but just in case.

PS How about Clara Bow, the IT girl, now there was a looker.

I had to look up Clara Bow, but realized I knew her face, but hadn't remembered her name. A curious character, apparently.

I didn't know that about Mary Astor...I've loved her in everything I've seen her in. IIRC, she's the lady in Across the Pacific, a most excellent Bogart flick.

That's hilarious about The Big Sleep...I was just thinking while watching it (again, but for the first time in a number of years) that the plot surely was hard to follow, but I so enjoyed the acting! :D
