Three possibilities come to mind (there are probably many others also)
1. They have been asking Trump for the classified material for a year and a half and Trump hasn't cooperated at all. Thus, they will say that they had no choice but to do it this way. And, yes, Trump had the power to declassify anything while POTUS, but that ended when he left office, so if the documents in question are still classified, he no longer has the power to declassify them.
2. This is about way more than classified material. As is the case with most big stories, the initial information isn't always correct.
3. The dems are dumb enough to think they can do this without any blowback even if it is just about classified documents. They may very well be that dumb, given their extreme hatred for Trump. However, what they don't realize is, if this turns out to be a nothingburger, they are helping Trump win in 2024.

Not sure I agree with that. It should be the case, but they have gotten away with so much so far and, given who is sitting in the White House right now, they have beaten him to this point.

The Dems publicly declared when they started the Jan. 6 hearings, they wanted to prevent Trump from running again. This raid stinks to high heaven. The National Archives and Records Administration claim there were classified documents in the boxes Trump removed from the WH during his departure. How would they know? Were they present when the boxes were filled? If so, why didn't they say something? If he removed classified documents, why did it take so long to report them?
I've seen no news reports the FBI removed anything from Trump's home. Did they find anything or will they take documents from the archives and say they were removed from Mar-A-Largo?
A top lawyer of the Clinton administration pointed to the passage of U.S. Code Title 18, Section 2071 that states, "Whoever, having the custody of any such record, proceeding, map, book, document, paper, or other thing, willfully and unlawfully conceals, removes, mutilates, obliterates, falsifies, or destroys the same, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both; and shall forfeit his office and be disqualified from holding any office under the United States."
However, legal challenges could make efforts to prevent Trump from running again under this code difficult, Elias noted in a follow-up tweet.
"Yes, I recognize the legal challenge that application of this law to a president would garner (since qualifications are set in Constitution). But the idea that a candidate would have to litigate this is during a campaign is in my view a "blockbuster in American politics," he wrote.
The goal is to force Trump as a presidential candidate to take away valuable time from campaigning and put it towards litigating any charges against him.

I still think there is more going on here than what has been reported so far. Biden and company can't be dumb enough to do this strictly based on classified documents, could they? OK...sure, Biden is that dumb, but everyone else involved in approving this can't be that dumb especially if they don't know for sure he would be convicted and, even if he was, if that would keep him from running for office again (see note above about Constitution requirements for running for POTUS). They have to know that this will energize his supporters and even NeverTrumpers.

How about knowingly using a false document to illegally obtain a warrant to start a fraudulent investigation and then fill the team of investigators with beyond biased individuals, one at least that is linked to the false document?
How about when that fails you try to impeach the president for quid pro quo (for trying to investigate quid pro quo) and then immediately nominate an individual who bragged about successfully implementing quid pro quo on video!
