Family Names

Are family names a thing of the past? It used to be children were named after other members of a family; grandfather & grandmother, father and so on. If not a first name then a middle name. Also, first sons were named after fathers, Sr., Jr., I, II, III, etc.

My mother chose my first name as she had a Swedish friend named Karen and my middle name came from my maternal grandmother. I love that I am named after women she loved and respected. My oldest brother was named for my father. My mother has 3 granddaughters who carry on her name.

Do you like the idea of family names?

Yes, I am a strong believer in family names. I fear we are losing many of the great "strong" names in lieu of cute names. Oh, well- I guess it is a sign of the times.

I was named after my father, who was named after his father. Both my children are named after me.

I have decided black people must hate their kids with some of the screwed up names they come up with.

My middle name of "Lynn" came from my maternal grandfather, who died before I was born. Mother also named my sister after him with an alternative spelling of "Lynnda".

If "She who adores me" and I had a son, we were going to give him a middle name of "Ross" after her father. But, we had a daughter instead. We did give her the middle name of "Elizabeth" after a dear friend.

We had some state names in my family. My mother's name was "Nevada", and I had an aunt named "Georgia".

My son's middle name is my father's first name and my daughter's initial's are those of my paternal grandfather.

My hubby did not want our son named after him. He wanted it to be different. When we had our daughter we went through so many names and could never decide on one. When I was about to deliver I had a dream that I saw my daughter at the age of about 7 or 8 and she was in trouble and I called out her name. I told my husband I know her name, I dreamed about it and so it became her name. When I was pregnant with my son, we promised my daughter (who was 3) that she could name him as long as we agreed....she kept saying his name was going to be Derek Michael..we were ok with that. The day he was born, the nurse asked us his name and we looked at our daughter and she said no I don't like that name anymore. I have a new one. My husband and I cringed..she then called out his name and we both looked at the nurse and said write it down quick..we love it!

Funny part is...both of our kids are kinda named after my husband and I and we didn't even plan it :laugh

hubby is Alan, daughter is Alana Im Stephanie son is Stephen ;D

My family is filled with family names - my brothers (all 5 of them) were named after various parents, grandparents and uncles and I'm named after my grandmothers (Eliza and Leola - they chose Lisa).

The princess is named after her great grandfather. But, that's only because I couldn't convince the hubby to let me name her "Macy Dillard" since I spent so much time shopping for our princess while I was pregnant. My revenge was sweet however, because the princess's first word was (and I'm telling the God's honest truth here): "mall."

I was suppose to be named Dana after nobody but The nurses were watching The Waltons while my mom was in recovery from giving birth to me and Grandma Walton was screaming for Elizabeth and so mom said Elizabeth right after her and the nurses took that as my name.. true story but I took the name and owned it lol My mom just told people she named me after her aunt Elizabeth cause she was embarrassed on how I got it

My mom did give me a family name as my middle name and I refuse to tell you what it is. I broke a 13 generation tradition not giving my baby girl that name.

Anywho... I gave Ashlyn my name as her middle name ( starting a new tradition )

I've been doing research into my family tree. I so would've used some of those names if I had known they were family names. There are some really cool names.

Neither I, nor my sister, are named after anyone. But there are a couple of names that repeat in the family...Elizabeth, Rebecca, Nancy, Fletcher...are a few. I'm glad I have my own name but I wouldn't have minded being called Elizabeth or Rebecca. :)

BabyB's middle name is my great grandfather's. I have always loved the name, and the stories I heard of him growing up. The name is super rare and very old school. Otherwise I'd tell ya. If we ever have a girl, her name will be Lula, after my great grandmother. It's also old school, but southern and I love it.

I'm my father's only child but the third child named after him. That might tell you a bit about his character.

My first name is the female version of my grandfather's middle name and my middle name is the same as my mother's.

BBG is named after his dad.

Our kids have our middle names, but fresh first names.

My first name is the same as my Dads, Shauwntavious and my middle name is from my Moms family, Goldstein.

We have the same middle name. I gave my daughter my middle name. My oldest son is Ryan Alyn. I gave him a variation of my middle name. I came to like the name Ryan while in high school and said if I ever had a son, that's what his name would be. My second son is named after me, but has both his grandfather's middle names for his.
