Family History

We went to our Shrine Club meeting last night. We got in a conversation about family history. I might have to start doing some tracking. I know of five ancestors who were in the Confederate Army, documented by the Sons of Confederate Veterans. My mother is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, so there is more documention there. They are supposed to be very extensive.
At the end of the meeting, one of the ladies came up and said she had been listening to the conversation. My mother is from Emanuel County. The family cemetery, named Longcreek, is there. She said she had family buried there. She mentioned the Cannady family, which were her cousins. There are Cannadys that were my cousins. I'm sure it is the same family. Emanuel was small and rural then, it is pretty much the same now. She said they had family reunions in the Summertown Schoolhouse, years ago. So did we. It may be the same reunions. I don't remember her, and she didn't remember me. I'm going to find out.

The older I get, the more interested I become.

My mom has done extensive research on both her maternal and paternal relatives. She has lineage going back to the 1400s! There was a long spell when she had a "break" in the tree. On Ancestry.com, a gentleman reached out to her. He had the missing links. And her research helped him even more. It's really cool.

My grandmother's maiden name was "London". Jack London (Call of the Wild) was a relative (although he was adopted.) We are also kin to the Portmans (John Portman who designed the Peachtree Plaza and other Atlanta landmark buildings.) It's neat to see where we come from!

My great great great great Grandfather was Jon B. Gordon who was a Civil War General and the 53rd Governor of Georgia

he also brought the KKK to Atlanta.... yeah something I am not to proud of

other than that I got nuttin lol

Lol - Here's something scary about 2 years ago (after living in Paulding Co. for almost 20 years), I found out that my great great grandfather was from Paulding County!! The Wigleys lived right on the battlefield in New Hope and some of them are buried in the New Hope Cemetery. I also found out that my grandfather had two wives (at the same time). He died an unfortunate death - a suicide that was later deemed a "likely" homicide (he apparently shot his other wife and then managed to shoot himself in the head TWICE and didn't leave any gun powder residue on his hands). My grandmother and his sisters went to their graves believing that he was never married to that woman, but a marriage certificate and her death certificate (and headstone) indicate otherwise. My uncle believes that either her father or cousin found out and killed them both, but it was never investigated because the family wanted to avoid the embarassment.

Are you related to David Wigley?

I've been working with Ancestry.com for the past month..... I love it! so far we've found out a few interesting things, but alot of it we already knew.... related to the Vanderbilts through my Mother, etc. But now I have the documentation.

I've reached a stumbling block as far as one relative goes...but I keep looking.

I started that along time ago and I haven't had the time to really get into it again. I have lots and lots of family that I know nothing about and I wanna track it down. Maybe one day!

My family tree doesn't fork.

That's not something I'd go around telling. ;)

The one thing I want to find out (both parents are/were good genealogists, so we have a good start) is whether I have Indian blood. Sorry - Native American. Whatever. Anyhoo, best we can figure, I'm 3/8 Indian - 1/4 Creek and 1/8 Cherokee. But we can't prove it, and Indian records are not in great shape. Plus, there was that whole Trail of Tears thing...

I don't want to live on the reservation or anything. I just want my fair share from Harrah's profits. :D (Kidding.) I think you do have to live on the reservation for casino profits to kick in. I just like the idea of knowing. That, and being a confirmed minority so I can get my victim freak on. :D

I've got quite a bit of Cherokee in me too, I had a great great (2 greats I think) grandfather who was named Panther. And I'm part German with a touch of Irish.

Maybe that's why I'm funny looking.

I found out this past week that we are Swiss! Who knew??? No one in my family did. Part of my Mom's family comes from a small village north of Bern, Switzerland.

No Native Americans in my family.... German, Dutch, Irish, .... and Swiss. ;D

If he is a descendant of Pinkney, John, Joseph, Jackson or Elisha Wigley, then yes. There is also an Evert Wigley that currently lives here in Paulding (a pastor) that lives close to the battlefield. Considering the proximity, I'm guessing we're somehow related.

David has an alarm business here in Paulding. I've done business with him for years.

If his family have been in Paulding for generations - I'm sure there is relation somewhere on the family tree.

Oh this is so much fun. I have been working on our tree for a while. At this point I have about 6 trees going right now. It can be overwhelming some times. My husbands family has CIBs for their Native American roots. Finally figured out where our grand daughter got that beautiful head of red hair. Still trying to figure out some other things though. :))

The 1/4 part should be easier to figure out since the connection is so recent. You at least have a good starting point to work back from. Is/was it your mother's parent or your father's that is/was full blood?

Hubby's family supposedly has some N.A. Indian blood but the exact relative seems to be hard to pin down.

I tried ancestry.com years ago but lost interest. I was blessed knowing all of my grandparents into my early twenties and now regret I did not ask each of them past history of family, or just telling a story and a drop of a name
