COVID-19 May Leave 12 Million Children Unable to Read

Sadly, most parents are all too willing to just dump their child on the school system to educate them.

Nope, school is only a small part of a child's education. Education is 24 hours a day, and the parents need to actually be the primary educators. School is only a few hours a day where we send them for that portion of it, and we should closely monitor what they are being taught there.
My parents "dumped" me, after about second grade, but they gave me a foundation for learning and I did well in school. They made sure I didy.homework, though they didn't "check it" ( do it for me). If I got a bad grade onna homework assignment, so be it. They expected all A's in advanced STEM.classes, and at least B's in the other classes.

A lot of parents today don't even read report cards or know when kids have homework.
I don’t mess around with our grandson, I flat out pay him for good grades. I told him to consider it his paycheck for working, that he is currently employed as a high school student. He gets $20 for each A, $10 for each B, $0 for each C (being average doesn’t get you anything), he pays me $10 for each D and he pays me $20 for each F. He has made all A’s and B’s, mostly A’s, since middle school.
Jeez Mr. Moneybags, an entire $20? :D

$20 for each A so for the year he can make a few hundred bucks. Hey, what can I say, that’s big money for S Paulding students. If he’s lucky he can get into UGA...or Bama.

I'm just having a hard time dealing this this concept of losing one year of school is causing *10* year old students (5th Grade) to suddenly not be able to read.

I highly suspect that if they can't read at 10, then they couldn't read at 8 either, and if they couldn't read in 3rd grade, then that had nothing to do with Covid.

I own almost ALL of these books !!!

Most vintage editions from my childhood...

Can recite Fox in Socks (my favorite) flawlessly...
I did too. Now they are in my old house, in the attic of my ex-husband. If he has not given them to some other family. He was a democrat and was always willing to give the shirt off the kids and my back... never his own shirt from his back...:banghead:

So, as much as I hate to admit it, the books I had as a kid which included the Dr. Seuss collection, and all the others the kids were given, that the kids and I read over and over, may or may not be in the attic anymore. Books I had hoped to read to my own grandchildren.

My kids say they will go back and get them. :ninja: They both commented on the Seuss books we had, when this "ban Seuss" "woke" thing happened. Their father already has a poor relationship with them, if he has given those books away, they may never repair it. :fingerwag:
