How would you feel about a church allowing coffee during morning or evening worship service in the sanctuary?

We have a church here in Hiram that does that very thing.......first time I visited I thought wow...how kewl is this....then I found myself getting up heading to the potty during service.....then I thought...No not a good idea...LOL...but they also gave me a goody bag with a "TO GO INSULATED COFFEE MUG"..,

I'm pretty sure I know which church you're talking about. We went there a time or two when they were meeting in a local school. It wasn't our cup of tea, or should I say coffee. I didn't get any coffee, but should have to stay awake. The service felt more like a youth rally than Sunday service.

Yep could be the same church.....lots of youth there......I went for about 3 months and only because my son enjoyed going.....and until our Pastor Alan got his church going in Rockmart....but the coffee was good...LOL

Whew! Some of y'all are tough. :laugh Good thing God doesn't have all those restrictions. :laugh :laugh :laugh :laugh

Actually, couldn't it be a form of "defiling the temple"?
Only if you're defiling your body. That's the temple God resides in as mentioned in the NT.

But, Jesus was furious that the people were defiling the temple in the NT - remember, he pitched a fit about it...

You are correct. He was making a correlation between the Temple, where God, at that time, resided, to what He was teaching about the New Covenant. After Jesus was crucified, God dwelt in the hearts of those who believed in Him. The Ark of the Covenant held God's Spirit in the Temple but now His Saving Grace provides us with the Holy Spirit to live in us. A Church is just a place to gather and worship Him. That's why we can have 'church' anywhere at any time and can come into the presence of the One who sits on His High Throne without having to go to a temple or meeting place.

Remember, His whole point about that incident was to teach us NOT to defile the Temple by worldly things. That place (temple) changed after His death.

This is a very interesting topic... I even did a google search to see if coffee was mentioned in the bible. :))

On one hand the coffee bean is surely one of God's creations. (gazesupwardnsaysthankyou)
One the other hand I can understand the reverance for the even the most humble sanctuary.
I have been to a couple of very holy places in my life and anything but pure silence would be out of the question.
Although I am not a religious person, I do have great admiration and respect for religious traditions.

I concur!

During our search for a church to attend up here, we visited a nearby church. Highly recommended by neighbors. They have what looks like a food court just outside the sanctuary. I thought the sanctuary was the gym - nope. They had "dueling" baptismal windows. There were folks bringing in coffee, sports drinks, danish, biscuits, pretty much anything they wanted. Mrs. Mac and I walked out during the service - just way too much a party going on in there.

There used to be an elderly couple that would bring a mug of coffee from home to the church. I'm not a fan personally (I leave it in the car), but I don't have a huge problem...and I'm the one that does the sweeping.

We have a pot-luck after the service, and that's really nice: a big family around a dining room table. When we have special events, our dining room can't hold everyone, so we set up a few tables in the sanctuary, and a lot of people eat in the pews. We have a smallish building.

Your situation is way different from most here. Many here are talking about MONDO churches with multiple Sunday services, sanctuaries that seat hundreds, if not thousands, etc. Mac's description is one of the more outrageous, although I do not doubt it one bit. Your church sounds like somewhere I would love to attend. When I stop for a visit on one of our sojourns out west, I shall plan on a visit to church as well. ;)
