Coffee in the pew?

How would you feel about a church allowing coffee during morning or evening worship service in the sanctuary?

I wouldn't personally like it. :girlsaysno I guess if a group decided they wanted it, I'd have to suck it up. But, for me, it's a time of worship and learning. Not a social hour. But, I'm very traditional with church matters.

I can't say that I like that idea. It kind of smacks the reverence, that one should have for the sanctuary, in the face. Maybe I'm too old fashioned, but I don't like it.

I'm pretty sure I know which church you're talking about. We went there a time or two when they were meeting in a local school. It wasn't our cup of tea, or should I say coffee. I didn't get any coffee, but should have to stay awake. The service felt more like a youth rally than Sunday service.

I've been very surprised by the change in many local churches and the use of the sanctuary. I was taught it was even rude to chew gum in the church sanctuary and never, ever, ever bring food or drink in there!! Well an occasional mint if you had a cough was allowed.

Times are changing, congregations are changing, some churches see the need to attract younger parishioners. I have mixed emotions but I understand both sides.

I don't think I could drink coffee or anything else in the sanctuary. :dunno

I am not a churchgoer... but I do not think that God would mind if I enjoyed a hot cup of Joe while listening to the good word.
God wants us to be happy... if a cup of coffee makes someone happy and gets them in the pews then I do not see it as a big deal.

My dear Grandmother, who helped to found a very large congregation in the midwest,
gave us gum in church every Sunday... but the Wesleyans are a pretty relaxed bunch.

I personally don't care one way or the other - if you need coffee, have at it. But, I do have a couple of pet peeves.
1. It drives me nuts when people get up during the service and walk out. It's rude and disrespectful - the only acceptable situation is when you are removing a crying baby or misbehaving child. And, don't try to sneak out during prayer, that's more disrespectful than if you do it during the sermon -- WE'RE TALKING TO GOD!!

2. Food in the sanctuary. It's not a movie so leave the snacks at home. This past Sunday I watched a mom spill cereal while sitting in the sanctuary. She immediately brushed it off of her seat and onto the carpet and left it there for someone else to clean up.

3. Talking to the person sitting next to you during the sermon. Unless you're talking to Jesus himself, I expect you to sit there and listen. An occasional "amen" or "preach it" are perfectly acceptable.

4. Your phone - put it away!! Don't expect me to believe that you are reading the Word on your phone. If you were reading the Word, your fingers wouldn't be typing that text...

Other than that, I love church.... ;D

:spitchick Preach it! :sermon

I would never do it, but if you can't sit without a cup of coffee, then by all means sit with your coffee. :)) I would rather you be there.
I do not like the people that snack in the sanctuary. As someone who did a 2 year stint as part of the ladies that clean the church, it is appreciated when you pick up your cheerios and not stick your gum under the pews. That is all.

Whew! Some of y'all are tough. :laugh Good thing God doesn't have all those restrictions. :laugh :laugh :laugh :laugh

I don't think anybody mentioned restrictions; just preferences. I have no quarrel with churches who do this if that's what they feel they should be doing.

I will say I agree with Lisa C, EXCEPT that I do know a couple of people who take sermon notes on their phones. That would drive me cray personally, but whatev.

Actually, couldn't it be a form of "defiling the temple"?

Actually, our church has a signed that says "no food or drinks in the sanctuary." I may be the only person that has ever read it though...

Only if you're defiling your body. That's the temple God resides in as mentioned in the NT.

For clarification to EVERYONE...........even those with a difficult sense of humor...........I was only poking fun at the group. Notice all of the laughing smilies. Ease up. My personal opinion is in the same neck of the woods. I don't like people bringing things like that into the sanctuary either. I think it is a place of reverence as well and I've taught my children to respect that. Our church has signs to say not to bring it in the worship center but some people ignore that request.
