I made a trip to Lowe's yesterday to purchase a gallon of paint and a set of hinges. I was trying to figure out where hinges would be and someone walked by and asked if they could help me. Showed him the old hinge I brought with me and he went right over and said this pkg. is exact same thing. I placed it in the cart and went to the paint dept.

Told the dept mgr what I was doing and he suggested I might need a little bit of spackling, I said ok, get me some. He brought it over, I placed it in my cart and I headed to the checkout.

When I got home I pulled the hinge pkg from the bag and noticed it had been taped shut. The pkg was missing 2 screws.

I pulled out the can of spackling and noticed there was some of it around the edge of the lid. I opened it and looks like there is a couple of tablespoons missing and it looked like someone had put it in a caulking gun and put it back into the can.

It seems lowe's places used, returned merchandise back on the shelf. Be sure to check whatever you buy there before you leave so you don't have to make a trip back.

I am headed back there and will have a talk with the manager. I suspect it is just one of lowe's policies to do this.

I think we will be home depoting for a while anyway.

I hate to hear that, but thanks for the heads-up, Sis. I typically like Lowes over Depot and wouldn't be surprised if both weren't guilty of such practices. While looking through items in the past, I've seen partially opened packages and just passed over them. I wasn't sure if the store did it or if it was a shoplifter removing part of the product.

I'm sure they probably do but lowe's happens to be the one of the moment that has aggravated me so no $$$ for them for a while til I get disgusted at depot. lol

Let us know how they handle it. My guess is they give you a refund or exchange and put the ones you returned back on the shelf :Stick

As far as the missing pieces from hinge packages, you will find the same thing at the depot.
I have had to buy hinges/knobs occasionally for various different jobsites and I have had the (missing pieces) scenario happen at both stores.

Lowes will make it right. I won't shop at HD... just not a fan of the unhelp you get there. We got some inferior laminate flooring that we must return. I have no reason to believe we will not get our full refund... we have TRIED to use a couple of boxes.

I hope everything works out for ya.

I love Lowe's and have never had a problem with them. I hope this is just an isolated incident Kattie E. and hope everything is made right for you!

Seriously though, they should hire her. They couldn't find a better person to run the place ;D

By the way, I've always had no issues with product at HD and only one time had a no service issue (and that was seemingly not the employee's fault). I don't like Lowe's at all. Put the two stores side by side and I'll go in orange first every time.

I don't care much for Home Depot in Hiram. I was in there looking at wood laminate flooring for the house and the two people working in that department hadn't a clue what they were talking about. They didn't even know what a stair nose was. They finally got somebody who knew what she was doing and I placed an order. They call me and tell me my order was in. I make arrangements for them to deliver it and then later they call me and tell me they were waiting for 12 more cases to arrive. I have a problem each time I go in there finding someone who knows what they're doing. Customer service there is subpar.

The Hiram store probably did end up basing so much of its business on the contractor, etc. that they lost the touches the other stores have for dealing with Joe Homeowner. I generally have been fortunate in my experiences in Hiram in that I haven't needed any help with anything. I do notice a very real difference between it and other locations, though. Funny the reputation they have among other stores, though. They are considered a pretty big deal. I have to guess their lack of competition because of the location give them some pretty big sales numbers added to the sq footage they have ... they are considered an all around monster by others in the region.

If Lowe's builds a store in Hiram, HD will take a huge hit. I know a lot of folks around where I live who shop at the HD store on 41.

I wish they would build a Lowes in Hiram. If they do, Deep Homo won't get another cent from me.

Uhm...no job offers. I may be the last person on this planet that remembers what customer service is and apparently lowe's wants no part of it. lol

That's the fact Jack! :D

Before I did anything else I called the lowe's 800 number. Talked with someone about my complaint. She took the info and said someone from the store would call me within the next 24 hrs. My first question to the 800 number gal was, "is it lowes policy to sell used, returned products at full retail price?" She told me "no".

Two or three hrs. later someone from the store did call. He apologized and addressed my question about the lowes policy question about 3 times. He also mentioned 3 times that there is a deceptive element in our society that take advantage of them. On his 3rd mention of that, I told him I realized that but they should be checking the returns when they come in. The items I was complaining about could have been easily spotted.

What I failed to mention to him that not only does the person at their service counter get a chance to inspect the returned item. At least another person placing this item back on the shelf had a chance to inspect it.

I really was not pleased with the outcome of our conversation. He just sort of kept trying to be argumentative and defensive. (He didn't realize how lucky he was that I was "de-clawed" last year or I would have taken him to the woodshed about this situation. Those argumentative hormones don't seem to be around much anymore. lol)

I told him I would be shopping at Home Depot for a while and told him also I realized they will probably do the same thing. He wished that these incidences wouldn't make me stop shopping at lowes. I did tell him that around Christmas last year I picked up a multi outlet plug in thing and when I got home noticed that the packaging was damaged on it and it had been returned and one of the outlets didn't work. For me to make 3 or 4 trips in there and have these 3 things happens I guess just seems like pretty bad luck, huh? lol

I will say it again, check your lowes merchandise for damage or missing parts before leaving the store.

I had the same thing happen except it was lumber. I had bought material to build a deck, I measured it and figured exactly what I needed. Went and got it and while building the deck I noticed nail holes in the decking boards, I figured I could live with that until I got one that had 3" cut off it making it to short.

I had 6 total that was cut that I returned they asked me why I didn't notice it when I picked it out. I said I shouldn't have to measure each board and look for nail holes when I buy new lumber. They was just going to replace it and I said I was not pleased and I needed to speak with the store manager. They replaced the boards and gave me 6 more free.

While looking for the new ones I found several more with holes and cut. I told them and they asked if I told someone and I said yeah, you and I left them in the floor.

I am sure you will have the same problem anywhere if you checked them all. I was satisfied with the return I got and told them that was fair enough.

You know that was the point I was disappointed about. They did nothing to try to make it right.

The lovely thing about a local merchant is that they are less likely to do this because it is a personal reflection upon them.

I've had read luck with the local hardware store and building supply store. Of course, the tradeoff is an extremely limited selection versus a Lowe's and somewhat higher prices.
