Georgia teen reportedly dies while trying to 'car surf'

Georgia Authorities say a 16-year-old died late Monday after being injured while riding on top of an SUV, MyFoxAtlanta.com reported.

Anna Hawkins was "car surfing" on the hood of a Suzuki Grand Vitara on Couch Road in Dawsonville, which is about 30 miles north of Atlanta, when the driver lost control and hit an embankment, according to the Georgia State Patrol. Hawkins fell off the vehicle.

These stories make me so sad. Young people think they're so invincible. :(

Oh no. :(

This makes me cringe; car surfing is so dangerous. When I was 16 we were all over at a friend's house whose mom was out of town. One friend had a big boat for a car, we called it the green goblin or something like that. Another girlfriend hopped on his hood as he drove down the road, but she fell off the front of it, and he dragged her under the car. Once he got stopped, and got her out, she had to be rushed to the er. Her foot was mangled and broken, her leg was hamburger meat, and she had several serious burns and a head injury. He wasn't even going that fast.

Yep, that story immediately took me back to the late 80's and my time at Ft Benning, GA while attending an Army course there. My roommate and friend was an Army Ranger dude from CA. One evening while we were driving back to the barracks after we "destroyed" the base bowling alley (another story for another time) he rolled down the passenger window of my car, climb out the window and up onto the hood of my car while I was driving on post. Although I wasn't driving too fast because the speed limit was only 35-40 mph all I could do is to continue driving at the same speed so I didn't sling him off the car. Any sudden increase in speed, slower or faster, would have spelled disaster. I was praying for no stop signs, sharp curves, or Military Police. It would have been difficult to try to explain that one along with why there was a life-sized cardboard cutout of the Blues Brothers and a beer soaked Army boot in the back seat.

Devastating story. My daughter and I were talking about it as we drove to camp this morning. :(
