Braves 2024

Captain Rhett Butler

Driving Instructor

The Braves announced on Monday that they picked up pitcher Charlie Morton’s $20 million option. Atlanta drafted Morton back in 2002 and spent his rookie year with the Braves in 2008. He returned to the team in 2020 and later signed an extension with the club option for 2024.

The organization decided not to pick up the option for outfielder Eddie Rosario, relief pitcher Kirby Yates and relief pitcher and Gwinnett native Collin McHugh. The team previously announced it would not bring back relief pitcher Brad Hand.

Morton was a solid starter last season. He still has one of the best curve balls in the majors when he is on. He has been around a long time but if he still produces at a high level that is one staring spot you don't have to worry about. Strider should be solidly in the rotation as well as Fried. That is three solid starters. Rosario can be replaced he doesn't play everyday is a streaky hitter and definitely not a gold glover. I do give him credit for some clutch hits in big situations. Yates,Hand and McHugh can be replaced. McHugh was durable and pitched a lot of innings. All contributed to last season but none are stand outs. The bullpen is a precarious job anyway. It is very dynamic often with multiple changes in a season. They need pitching upgrades and a solid everyday left fielder. Interesting to see what happens during the off season.

Not directly Braves news other than they will play against him a lot now but wow...that's a ton of money.

Talk about a crazy contract. All but $20 million is deferred until after the 10 years. He'll make $2 million per year for the next 10 years and then $68 million per year for the following 10 years. Apparently this was his idea in order to allow the Dodgers to spend more money on additional players (at least for the next 10 years anyway).

Saw yesterday where Braves signed Fried and Minter to one year deals. Kind of to avoid negotiations and hold outs headed into the season. Fried is a good call Minter is up and down but we need a solid bullpen.

Sadly, this is likely Fried's last year as a Brave. Maybe they will surprise us all and he'll sign a long term contract like so many others not named Freeman and Swanson have done.

If Fried doesn't have a good season, especially if because of an injury, he will wish he had signed a longer contract with the Braves.

I don't have a good feeling about this. Hopefully he doesn't need Tommy John surgery.

Strider had no motion on his pitches and his placement was bad. He throws hard but they were right down the middle a lot of the time. I hope his addition of a curve did not screw up his mechanics and injure his arm. It was a big comeback in the 8th and 9th.

They had chances early in the game but didn’t come thru, I was surprised that we’re able to win it late in the game. Guess that’s why they play 9 or more.

I'm surprised to see the Tigers are 6-1. It won't take long before they go from 1st to near the bottom in their conference.
