Does anyone get tired of those pencil sharpeners that sharpen unevenly or so roughly that they keep smashing the lead (like the one mounted in my classroom and the one at home I just threw away)? So, I went shopping and bought two sharpeners, one for school, and one for home.
I've used this green one a little and it sharpens very well, but it is at school on what passes for my desk. It does a good job and sharpens the pencil to a nice point. The mechanism prevents it grinding the pencil to nothing. I bought its big brother for home so I could sharpen pencils to different points as I work on sketches. (A sharp point is not a good thing for soft lead.)
The black one is actually bigger, but doesn't look like it in the photograph. I've been using it a lot. It's awesome and really does sharpen all the different points.
I've mentioned before I love fountain pens. I use then to write, and I've found them really good for writing in Chinese (and this week I learned that they're popular in China for the same reason). But, I use pencils for math, for writing ideas, for writing drafts, and for editing as well as for sketching.
Anyway, both pencil sharpeners were on the expensive side, but I'm liking them a lot, especially the black one. (I wish I could steal the colors from the green one for the better sharpener, but I'll get to see the green one a lot once school starts.) These are quality sharpeners and they should last a good long time.
For pencils, my favorite is the Staedtler Rally Pencil, but I also really like Dixon Ticonderoga pencils.
Yes, school starts in just a few weeks, and I've started thinking about it. I really needed my summer vacation this year and could really use some more. Last year was rough because I got involved in a lot of things besides day to day teaching, and I had the whole housing problem on top of that. This year the housing problem is solved, I have huge savings, and my awful colleague was asked to resign. I will still be doing a lot of work beyond teaching, perhaps more than ever, but this should be a calmer year.
