20 years ago there was a KPBS show of, I think, 5 families who were to make it on their own in Wyoming. Of course the show's basis was that they were to live like pioneers of the 1800's. They got little to nothing from the outside modern world.
They all lost a tremendous amount of weight due to lack of protein and available food, they could not put away enough wood or food to sustain them through the winter. They were in an area where they had trees to use for the small homes they built, and flat land to have chickens and farm animals, but once the winter set in, it was brutal and animals did not do so well, since they only had enough food for the people. The show ended reporting that none of the families would have made it through winter, and as a pioneer, would have perished. All their time was in pursuit of animals to hunt, chores to keep the place going... no washing machines, vacuum cleaners, modern stoves... keeping a fire going to cook hot food is a full time job... no microwaves. Camping is fun until it isn't. In the summer, there was a freak cold spell where they got snow and cold for long enough it killed much of their garden... Mexico or some country where the growing season is year round would be a better place to colonize.
If this group has nothing to barter with in the outside world, they will soon starve or die from exposure. Can't believe many people will continue to give money past the initial start of this experiment.
Maybe they can film their progress and get money from that to keep living. Good luck to them, they will need it.
