Aircraft lands on a comet

While I think it's way cool that they were able to accomplish the landing, I've no clue as to why they're doing this. I'll have to read up on it.

One word...exploitation. As in exploitation of mined minerals and other resources. Obviously that's far away still but this was to be the first step. Ok, they'll do other scientific tests and experiments but the driving force is future access to resources from space. At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

There is a lot we can learn from them, being travelers of the universe, plus J-man is right, many of them contain valuable minerals and mining them has been proposed for a long time. This particular adventure costs each EU household about the same as a cup of coffee. In space exploration terms, it was a veritable bargain. Hopefully it will be worth it.

Since I spent my afternoon working with my best friend, and not reading up on this, I thank y'all for the answer. :)

Pfffft

Bruce Willis did that years ago in Armagedden

Well that landing was pretty rough and damaged their spacecraft so badly they were not able to take off. They all died.
