Wow - Obese Woman\'s Husband Suing the Airlines...

LisaC

I'm here to spin the moral compass.
I'm thinking that if her health was that big of a problem, they shouldn't have risked her being so far away from the help she needed in the first place.

True and I don't disagree with you, but if they got over there okay, perhaps they thought it wouldn't be an issue to get home, especially when the airline specifically asked them when they were leaving so they could make the accommodation for her.

I don't know, this one has me scratching my head....

Perhaps they should have spent less money traveling and more money on getting her well.

And sure, she was able to get there no problem but to claim the airlines did nothing to help is ludicrous. Additionally, though her massive size may be more and more accepted in the US, they simply do not have the accommodations available in much of the world for people her size. If she needs special belt extenders, she should get her own and travel with them. If she needs special equipment to get in and out of the plane, she should not be flying or she should make whatever accommodations on her own. (rent specialty equipment herself)

And no, I'm not preaching from a size 2 frame ... but I also don't expect the world to accommodate my issues. Guess what, sometimes some people can't do what everyone else can. Quit whining about it and move along.

See ... SD not sharing her drinks and glitter has me in a pissy mood now. :rant

Again, I see the point, but what if they were lead to believe that the airlines could accommodate her issues? After all, the airline helped her get on and off of her initial flight, that's what has me perplexed. And, how incapacitated was this woman? How did they get her in and out of a car while she was traveling (if she had to have a lift to get into an airline seat, wouldn't she need the same accommodation in a car)? Could she walk? The article said something about Delta having only plastic wheelchairs and none that would accommodate someone of her weight. If she didn't have her own wheelchair, how did she get around?

You're in a pissy mood, call someone and get me the answers to this! You do this for me, I snag you some Goose and Glitter.... ;D

You seem to be leading yourself toward the road I'm on ... if she could do everything else up to that point, what was so difficult about the rest? According to the article, she has one leg and a serious weight issue. The airline that got her there left from the fattest country on Earth ... of course they were able to help her here.

But back on topic:

I do like your questions ... how the heck was she able to get out of the vehicle and into the airport?

Exactly. This is a case that I want to go to trial - I want to know the details!!

Agreed. I also know if I were that sick I wouldn't have traveled, but maybe they were pining for the homeland and wanted to make a last visit or something.

Sadly, had she made it to the US, I doubt she would be living anyway. Too many health issues.

When the fire department and airline employees can’t get you on a plane with a lift ... you’ve done eat yourself out of help!

The Airlines tried... below is the truth- they did not kill her or expedite her death, her obesity
did, and she has only her own health habits to sue for that!

If her husband sues the makers of her favorite treat, so help us all. I don't know where personal responsibility has gone now a days! I bet he bought many of the calories she consumed to amass that sort of weight… so while he is at it, he should sue himself too!

It should be noted that Vilma’s illnesses, especially diabetes, likely stemmed from her obesity. Extra weight takes a huge toll on our health, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, many types of cancer, sleep apnea, senile dementia, and other debilitating and chronic illnesses. Obesity is also one of the leading preventable causes of death worldwide. On average, obesity reduces life expectancy by 6 to 7 years.

Pictures of her wheel chair and getting in the car with help.

^This^^

The entitlement attitude is everywhere!

It all boils down to personal responsibility. They made a dumb decision to fly overseas when they knew they could be facing some issues with the trip (health problems, not being able to get on a plane without assistance, can't buckle in a plane without assistance) and now they want someone else to pay for their dumb decision.

But, here is what doesn't make sense. The airline got them there, asked for their return flight information so they could insure that they could transport her, and then couldn't they get them back. What did they do over here that they couldn't do over there? Something had to have happened to keep them from doing that, right? Airlines are generally consistent in using the same size planes to fly in/out of a particular city so I'm not sure why they couldn't get her back on the same size plane.

Again, not disagreeing with you about personal responsibility, but they could have easily been led to believe that if they could get her over there, surely the airline could get her back, right? Like I said, I'm scratching my head on this one...

Special lift to get her on the plane and special belt extender(s) ... equipment that is clearly not available on all planes/in all airports.

Additionally, was she trying to fly on the previously scheduled date/time or was there a change due to her health?

She gained about another 100lbs while over there and they did try numerous times to get her on and could not.

OMG ... gained 100 lbs? Really? Don't let me be on that jury. I'd make her hubby pay legal fees for the airlines.

I had heard it on one of the radio news programs. It was water weight maybe? I think that is what was said.

And do we know if she was traveling on her original date/time/flight?

Beats me, but if she was big to begin with and gained that much more, I would say it would not be unreasonable that the airlines (and I believe it was at least 2 if not 3 that attempted to help) could not accommodate her with that much more weight. :dunno
