Wow, I remember this car

Some of you already know that I spent my Junior High and High School years in Melbourne beach, Florida, about 30 miles south of Cape Canaveral. Back then there were no huge condo's, and most of the tourists stopped in Daytona or flew to Miami. It was a small town laid back atmosphere.

The ex Indy car driver, Jim Rathman, had the local Chevy dealership down there, and as a promotion, offered each Mercury and Appolo Astronaut returning from space a brand new Chevy of their choice every year on a free one year lease as long as they lived in the area. Of course, they all chose a loaded new 'Vette. I'm not sure if Armstrong's '67 was the first, I think it might have been, but I know it was a huge deal when he got it. There was a parade, speeches, and free hotdogs and key chains. I remember thinking that this very car was the car I wanted when I became successful. We used to see the Astronauts tooling around town all the time. I don't believe they ever paid for a beer or a meal in the State of Florida. They were real heroes.

Excellent move by the dude not to restore it. Great thinking re: historical significance. They are still my heroes.

Actually, that's the part that doesn't make sense to me. The car was only a year old when Armstrong traded it for a new one. If he just undoes the second owner modifications but doesn't restore the paint and interior etc.., that seems kind of pointless to me. It looked a lot better when Neil traded it than it does now, modifications or no modifications. I'd restore it to a good daily driver condition for a one year old '67. I can understand not fussing over it being a 100 point car, but fading the new paint to match the 40 year old paint seems wrong to me. The thing that makes it valuable now is who owned it.

This is what it should look like:

I know exactly where that would have been! We loved Melbourne so much.
