lotstodo
aka "The Jackal"
Some of you already know that I spent my Junior High and High School years in Melbourne beach, Florida, about 30 miles south of Cape Canaveral. Back then there were no huge condo's, and most of the tourists stopped in Daytona or flew to Miami. It was a small town laid back atmosphere.
The ex Indy car driver, Jim Rathman, had the local Chevy dealership down there, and as a promotion, offered each Mercury and Appolo Astronaut returning from space a brand new Chevy of their choice every year on a free one year lease as long as they lived in the area. Of course, they all chose a loaded new 'Vette. I'm not sure if Armstrong's '67 was the first, I think it might have been, but I know it was a huge deal when he got it. There was a parade, speeches, and free hotdogs and key chains. I remember thinking that this very car was the car I wanted when I became successful. We used to see the Astronauts tooling around town all the time. I don't believe they ever paid for a beer or a meal in the State of Florida. They were real heroes.
