Can someone explain why Trump thought it was a good idea to do recorded interviews with Bob Woodward? Stupid! Stupid! Stupid!

How many of us have played down a serious problem so that others will not panic? I have many times. I didn't ignore the problems; I worked hard to mitigate them with others. It's what a leader does. It's what Trump did with the virus. Imagine if he had addressed the nation and said, "This virus has the potential to kill 2 million of us in the US, but I have put together a team to..." All most people would have heard and the MSM would have reported is, "This virus has the potential to kill 2 million of us in the US," and panic would have ensued. Hell, when he shut the nation down on the advise of his medical experts doctors Faucci and Birx, people panicked. Look at how people were hoarding toilet paper, food, disinfectants, hand sanitizer, and many other essentials.

Yeah, I think some of that was to try and keep the panic down. Did he take it too far? Maybe, but at the time he's just making a judgement call.

Agreed but that still doesn't explain why you would say this stuff in recorded interviews with Bob Woodward or any other reporter.

I think most presidents would have done the same thing.

You could use FDR as an example following WWII. Our military was severely undermanned and not well equipped when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor and we entered the war to fight both in the Pacific and Atlantic. I bet he didn't say, "As we enter this war, we don't have the military capabilities to win it within in a year. This war will last many years and potentially millions of people are going to die."

Expected response from him and it may have worked were it not for the audio recordings.
