Wineberry Jam

So I brought a buttload of wineberries home from Virginia and tomorrow the jam making begins.

Anyone ever use wineberries to make any kind of preserves before?

I have never even heard of them. I will have to google them. Have fun!

I am allergic to raspberries so I will not be trying them. :D
Are you allergic to blackberries, too?

No. I can eat; strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries, but when I eat raspberries my throat closes up! I didn't look at your wiki link, I just looked at a plant site, and they said they were very similar to raspberries. Are they closer to blackberries? Because you know I heard the word wine and was interested.... :laugh

:))

Not that they are that much closer to blackberries ... just that since they are all so similar, if you're able to eat one than another might be ok, too. They might be just enough different that they'd be safe for you to eat. That's all.

How do they taste? I'm a BIG raspberry fan! Bought some nice blackberries at a local market today. Mrs. Mac is threatening to make cobbler tomorrow!

I like them better than raspberries. The taste is described by some as a bit more tart. I know the bears sure love them. They eat them before they touch the blackberries. (A tad disconcerting to be standing in what was clearly a bear's nap spot while picking berries but they'd moved off for the day while we were in there. Certainly not a spot I walk in alone from dusk til dawn. :))

Ok, first batch of wineberry jam is just out of the canner. Can't wait to pop a cooled jar and give this stuff a real taste test. The sample while cooking was pretty darn good stuff.

Next batch might be wineberry/blackberry combo.
