I've never been a huge TV watcher. Most of my favorite shows were once I discovered via Netflix. But I've realized that part of the magic that makes a TV show work is its era. Occasionally a remake works, but only if it is inspired by the original but goes its own way to fit in with the modern era. I'm thinking of
Battlestar Galactica. The new version worked because it took a basic premise but went its own way.
I would love to see
The Sandbaggers both redone and remade for the modern era. Part of its magic was its time: the Cold War. I'm old enough to remember the Cold War, so I identified with that aspect. Another aspect of its magic was that it was made by ITV on a shoestring budget. The sets were obviously sets. The special effects were clearly fake. The transition from video for interiors to film for exteriors was really obvious. But, the episodes were incredibly dense, the stories were well written, and (best of all) the series ended on a massive cliffhanger thanks to the sudden disappearance of the creator of the series. To describe the show as a bunch of people talking in offices does not do it justice. Also, the lack of any incidental music would be a complete turnoff to many.
But, I don't know if such a series could be made today. The espionage of today is scary: we're not spying on Russians. We spy on the Chinese, but we also have all kinds of terrorists, North Korea, and Iran to spy on. There is a wealth of potential for a remake of this show. But, large numbers of people would not watch that show.
