Though I always like the idea of presidents/VPs being veterans, would Trump choosing one as his running mate help him get elected?

I'm not sure that in itself will. I don't think it will be a negative at all, but I also don't think it will be "the" winning factor.

Running mates don't usually matter, but this year Trump's pick will provide a key contrast with Kamala Harris.

I can think of one veteran he could pick that would guarantee I'd vote for them. That would be DeSantis but it doesn't sound like DeSantis would consider being VP.

Also, short of Biden strangling a puppy on national TV, I don't think there is one thing either of them could do right now to put the election away now. There is just too much time before voting starts.
