Trump calls for first presidential debate to be moved up due to early, mail-in voting

I think this is a smart move on Trump's part as well. Most voters will see it necessary to have at least one presidential debate before any early votes are cast. Any appearance of Biden trying to avoid a debate will not look favorably for him by independent voters. Liberals are going to vote for Biden and conservatives are going to vote for Trump. It's the votes from the independents that will tip the scale one way or another.

Anyone paying any attention to broadcast news sees how in-person press conferences are held. Those at the podiums aren't wearing masks as they speak into the microphone and reporters are social distancing. The same method can be used for any debate. Both candidates can be at least six feet from each other on stage and the moderators six feet from each other as well. In most debates, the moderators are further than that away from the candidates anyway. There doesn't need to be an audience in attendance, as these are televised anyway.
