Authorities in south-central Texas say a veteran sheriff's deputy was shot and killed while waiting at a traffic light in his patrol vehicle.

Well, damn. I'm just so sorry. I'd ask what this world is coming to, but I'm afraid I already know. :(
 
There's just no practical defense against something like that. You can have the best officer safety out there, short of living in full on paranoia, you just can't be prepared for and defend against something like that.
