Spam is sizzling: Global favorite since World War II is at center of sushi craze

Following the end of the Battle of Okinawa, the Okinawans had no food. Their farm fields were destroyed, and what they had grown was confiscated by the Japanese army prior to the battle. The American soldiers took care of the starving Okinawans by giving them a food source they had plenty of - Spam. Spam was also introduced in Guam, the Philippines, and other Pacific islands during the war. Spam is still very popular on Okinawa. Restaurants there use it as an ingredient in many of their menu items.

BTW Spam is meat from the pork shoulder and ham. There are no other parts of a pig in it.
