So, who...

My fault, sorry, paid to have a brand new A/C put in, temperature drops to the point where it hasn't had to come on but once or twice after the first night.

I did get the outside coils of the old unit cleaned this morning, trying to make it limp into next year so I can spread the pain.

Well...

I thought I was coming home around dinner time today (Saturday)... not so...
Got a late call from a customer... his HP is not heating...
So one more call today.
Went out there... the Em heat would heat the house... but he does not like the elec meter running that fast... grin!
Looked at the unit... almost all the freon is gone... OH BOY... a tedious leak check... (UGH)
Go through the unit... cannot find anything inside and the usual culprits outside...
So I go a bit deeper, find the 'third service port' (only HP's have 3 different service ports)... had a leaking schrader valve, and the cap was not on tight.
So I changed that Schrader valve... then pumped down the system and changed the other 2x Schrader valves...
Put almost 10# of refrigerant in the system (4 ton HP)... and applied a thick gooey sealant to the caps and put them on.
System is heating like a champ... I left the customers house at 9:30 PM...
Oh, did I say... I left home this morning in shorts and a T shirt, with a flannel shirt for a jacket...
I need a HOT shower to warm up... grin!

Hey Sound Guy...
Yeah, it is your fault it got cold... for buying a new system... LOL
Just kidding... have to have someone to blame it on...
Grin!

Yeah but, CHA CHING!

Hope it was not R22!! How much does the new stuff cost a pound? (Retail)

No, it was 410... what you have in your new system...

I gave him a break... let it go for $45/#... usually more like $55 or 60/#...

I was there for well over 2 hours... the leak check took over an hour to do thoroughly... so I got a significant part of my fees back in the refrigerant price.

Selling refrigerant... is like a glass of sweet Tea at a restaurant... the reason the steak is competitively priced... is because the sweet Tea is a profit center... take away the profit from the sweet Tea... and the steak is gonna have to be marked up... :)

Well, finally gave in and turned on the heat early this morning. Hallway was 68, living room was 66. We'd shaved the dog thinking warm weather ahead and he was walking all over trying to get warm. Good news is the new furnace worked like a charm!

New furnace needs to work... grin!

Did you get the slight burnt oil smell... happens the first time the heat exchanger is heated up...
It will go away... :)

Yep. Since we always get a smell the first time the furnace is turned on after the A/C had been running a while, I wasn't concerned.

I've had some new ones fill the place up with smoke.

So have I... the really older Rheem/Ruud's were bad about that...
I used to un-box them outside, attach a flexible gas line to them, and run them for a few minutes to burn it off... then rebox it and take it to the customer to install...
Thankfully they fixed that problem.

When we start up package units, we take the door off to the blower compartment and block off the duct going down so we can blow the smoke to the outside.

Can't do that with split systems.
