Todd Shepard went looking to murder a police officer on Halloween night 2008, found Sgt. Michael King sitting in his squad car off the Delmar Loop — and, to this day, doesn’t regret shooting him in the head.

King’s family believes that Missouri has a death penalty for people like that. But a St. Louis County Circuit Court jury on Saturday morning disagreed, recommending a sentence of life in prison without parole.

Prosecuting Attorney Robert P. McCulloch, who prosecuted the case, said one juror had held out on a death sentence...

GRRR... But I can see that happening in DeKalb County. I can't even remember the last time they had a death penalty case...that is, a case where the defendant GOT the death penalty. They did manage to give Sidney Dorsey life for killing Derwin Brown (or whatever his first name was), but I don't think it's even life without parole. sigh
 
It is beyond my ability to comprehend ... the guy sat on the stand and admitted the killing, continues to show no remorse, continues to show such level of disrespect and basic FU to the system throughout the trial, and there's still somebody that thinks he doesn't deserve the death penalty. I have to believe that person is just fundamentally against the death penalty. No other way for me to process this one.
