Green onions do not have that big or purplish bulb at the bottom. They are smaller and more white.

When I purchase shallots at the grocery store they look like this:

Shallots tend to be used in a lot of sauces where it lends a more delicate onion flavor. If you can ever associate delicate with onion. lol
