Plane Overboard

In the military you usually have to pay for lost equipment, even if it means staying in the service. It is said that this is why a Captain always goes down with his ship!
Many years ago the Navy lost an F-14 Tomcat off of a carrier. They later recovered it by snagging the landing gear with a drag cable and hauled it in. I guess it was pretty much trash at that point, but they protected their high tech electronics from the Soviets. I imagine they will recover the F-18 in some way or form, but I wonder what the entire cost will be.

I've never seen anyone forced to stay in the Army because they broke something expensive.

After the court marshal they do. In 68 there was a PFC that got a 5 ton multi-fuel buried to half way up the windshield in a quicksand hole. After the court marshal, he had to completely rebuild the vehicle to mil-spec, and was marking time while he did it, after which was required to finish the rest of his obligation.
In case you were wondering, it took a VTR and three APC's to pull it out. They went in through the cab and got a cable wrapped around the transmission and pulled for all they were worth and fortunately it came out in one piece.

They never did anything like that from my time 1974-2010. I've seen where idiots, totaled vehicles then were court-martialed and sent to a detention barracks.
