I have acrophobia, fear of heights. My Dad did too. Mother always thought I inherited it from him.

Someone told me fear is learned... we don't naturally fear things...we see people being fearful and become fearful.

When we moms freak out when our child hurts themselves... it imprints on them. BEST to stay calm and act like it's no big deal it will be taken care of.

People develop specific fears as a result of learning. This has been studied in psychology as fear conditioning, beginning with John B. Watson's Little Albert experiment in 1920, which was inspired after observing a child with an irrational fear of dogs. In this study, an 11-month-old boy was conditioned to fear a white rat in the laboratory. The fear became generalized to include other white, furry objects, such as a rabbit, dog, and even a ball of cotton.[citation needed]

Although fear is learned, the capacity to fear is part of human nature. Many studies have found that certain fears (e.g. animals, heights) are much more common than others (e.g. flowers, clouds). These fears are also easier to induce in the laboratory. This phenomenon is known as preparedness. Because early humans that were quick to fear dangerous situations were more likely to survive and reproduce, preparedness is theorized to be a genetic effect that is the result of natural selection.

I am afraid of stairs. Not a crazy irrational type fear, but after having fallen down a flight, and breaking both legs, I don't trust myself on them anymore. I also have claustrophobia.

Now I have to go click on Katie's link and see where it takes me. :D

I have a fear of tornados ... I also hated living where there are hurricanes.

I share that fear of tornadoes with you FW. I have dreamed about them since I was a child. I've only seen funnel clouds in the air that haven't gone down to the ground yet. Worst thing about living in midwest.

Tornadoes do freak me out!! We have a safe room in the basement with no windows and only the door to get in it but I worry about being trapped in there!!

I didn't used to be afraid of heights but I can't get near the edge of anything I may fall off of. Don't know why all the sudden (about 10 years ago) it happened but it did. If I go to Stone Mountain I won't even let the adult kids within 25 feet of the edge. I can go up in the tram so it's just about falling off the edge of something.

I grew up where there were no tornados, but it seemed horrible that you would hear on the news about the people who died in a tornado at night because they did not know it was coming!

First thing I did when we moved here was get a weather radio… then it freaked me out with severe weather threat. I had no clue what that was … and severe thunder showers. Seemed like in 1998 when we moved here, that first year, that danged radio was always going off. I never knew if it was safe to go outside! :waggingfinger

I think we experience stories of others getting hurt or, dying from falling ...and most movies show people standing too close to the edge and falling. :waggingfinger

Plus we learned we are not invincible like our kids still think they are! :dunno

Speaking in front of a large audience skeerz me.

You are not alone!

<snip>
According to surveys, some of the most common fears are of ghosts, the existence of evil powers, cockroaches, spiders, snakes, heights, water, enclosed spaces, tunnels, bridges, needles, social rejection, failure, examinations and public speaking.
<snip>
One of the most common fears is the fear of public speaking. People may be comfortable speaking inside a room but when it becomes public speaking, fear enters in the form of suspicion that whether the words uttered are correct or incorrect because there are many to judge it.

I honestly can't think of any.

As for public speaking...I've done quite a bit of it and am pretty comfortable with it.
