Played around with my speakers a bit tonight, I do that at times just for fun. I put the little Daytons up and got the Sonys off the shelf. I've had these for 3-4 years.
Back story...this Sony speaker has been around for years and it looks the part. A very 80's looking box, and it's not terribly attractive. But looks isn't what really matters with speakers, right?
These have been mostly raved about for years and they used to sell cheap, they were one of the best deals out there. I bought mine on Black Friday for $73 a pair; now they normally run $180 ish a pair and are "on sale" for $123 a pair. At those prices, no longer a deal, but still a solid performer.
These are of a odd design; they have a tweeter and a super tweeter. The upper frequency response is rated at 50,000 hz. OK, that sounds like BS on paper, as the normal range of human hearing tops out at 20,000 hz. But you hear or feel something from it. Hard to explain, but it's there and you know it while listening to it.
These are amazing sounding speakers! Perhaps a touch on the bright side, but some of the sweetest mids and highs you will hear from any speaker. The 5 1/4" woofer holds it own, but the speaker definitely needs a sub to have a full bottom end. The only down side is that they don't hold up well under lots of power, they tend to break up at high volumes. But for small to medium rooms, they will rock.
They are still some of my favorite bookshelf speakers. I think I would rate them a touch better than the Emotivas, and that is saying a lot. Another speaker I have that sounds similar is the Klipsch RP-600m, which is also an excellent speaker.
