I recently rediscovered Blood Sweat and Tears. I listened to their music a lot as a teen. Most of their hits were in the late 60's, and I typically listen more to the 70's channel, so it has been awhile since I had heard their stuff. In building my latest "Juke Box", I ordered their greatest hits CD and added it to the mix.

Love their jazzy and bluesy sound!

I think this is the original Gershwin arrangement, but it's Billie Holiday and not Abbie Mitchell:

Some people say that Gershwin borrowed from the old Negro spiritual "Motherless Child" One of the earliest known recordings was this version by Paul Robeson, and I really don't see a big similarity.

Just for fun here is one of the most famous versions of "Motherless Child" and we almost never got to hear it. Richie Havens was the first performer at Woodstock, and many of the other performers were having trouble getting to the venue because of traffic. Havens played for four hours and ran out of songs. he improvised this mash up of "Motherless Child" and "Freedom" as his last song. Havens worked his entire life, but never became a "Star". One of his final public apperances was at Mountain Jam, hosted by the Allman Brothers. He was praised by acts from Jazz, Southern Rock, Folk, and Blues as an inspiration and a natural talent. Like Janis Joplin, his voice might be an acquired taste, but the soul springing from his body is noticeable to all.

Music thread, yay!! I love so many different genres of music, I could not live without it.
Here's a song dedicated to my kids:

Sorry for hogging the music thread but music is my go to when I'm happy, sad, lonely, sentimental, etc., last one for the night. Thanks for starting this thread, such a nice change from all of the political stuff. Music is something that unites us all. Oh, if you guys haven't checked out, "Live from Daryl's House, please do. If you're a music lover, you will not be disappointed!

"Hawaiʻi Aloha" sung to the tune of "I Left it All With Jesus."

Father Lyons was fluent in the Hawaiian language and composed many poems and hymns; his best known and beloved work is the hymn "Hawaiʻi Aloha" sung to the tune of "I Left It All With Jesus" (circa 1852.) The song was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame in 1998

Absolutely beautiful

I guess I have the unique honor of personally knowing 3 members of one of my favorite singing groups of all time. And the unique honor of being on the same program with them in 2005. Not bragging at all, just personally proud and blessed to know these guys. Not famous like most groups listed here, but they were #1 on the SGM charts when we sang with them and helped and supported our group on numerous occasions without asking for anything in return but friendship. The best member line up for The Palmetto State Quartet in its history singing to thousands at the National Quartet Convention. I'll put their blend and sound against any group living or dead.
