I woke up with this thought.
When the so called extortionist sends Mr Jones a text saying that he is sure Mr Jones wouldn't want his wife to know about a half million in cash and/or of Mr Jones's escapades while on county business, Mr Jones doesn't reply with something like, "What cash? What escapades? What in the heck are you talking about? You must be nuts."
No, he doesn't say anything like that.
What is his response?
"What do you want?"
Makes you wonder, doesn't it.
I mean, think about it.
This blackmailer isn't threatening to go the the law or news about this half million in cash, he is threatening to go the wife, with what we suppose are false tales.
How can you extort money from someone that way?
"Honey, look at this wacky text I got from some nut case. I wish we had a half mil in cash, don't you?"
Wouldn't that put the kibosh on the crooks plan?
I also wonder if LE ever asked themselves, hmmmm, usually you extort money out of someone by threatening to tell some nasty truth about them.
Hard to get someone to pay to keep something quiet that doesn't exist.
If you don't give me money, I will tell your wife you have a large amount of cash hidden.
Go ahead and tell her, she knows if I had a large amount of cash hidden, we wouldn't have had that fight over me wanting a new big screen TV.
