Local official mocks and insults citizens of Paulding County

Re: Tommie Graham mocks and insults citizens of Paulding County

Glad he's not my commissioner...I'd have given him an earful after watching that. And FTR, Mr. Graham, NO I DO NOT WANT THE MILLAGE RATE INCREASED. We pay enough damn taxes as it is, so you can just deal with it.

Re: Tommie Graham mocks and insults citizens of Paulding County

My takeaway on this was he was trying to get people to encourage others to attend the BoC meetings so they would have more input from the public. It didn't sound to me as if he was much in favor of enacting 7 furlough days for county employees because it would close county offices and courts an additional 7 days in the year. He said the only way to prevent that and give deputies a 2% raise was a millage increase, which he didn't sound like he supported either.

I think what he was doing was voicing his frustration that no matter what the BoC decides, they are going to take a lot of heat from it because all they hear from are those who are disgruntled with whatever decision they make. I can appreciate his concern and his desire to hear ideas from more of the public on what they would support. Remember, they took a lot of heat the last time they increased the millage rate, which wasn't all that long ago.

I didn't take offense to what he said. I actually agreed.

I have no clue who he is or have never met the man.

That was my take too

Re: Tommie Graham mocks and insults citizens of Paulding County

I get what he was trying to say but it was a childish and unprofessional way to do it.

He shouldn't have used the mocking voice when making his point. That wasn't very professional and did distract from the message he was attempting to convey. Some people, once they hear him using the mocking voice, will not hear what he was really saying.

Which is very evident in the OP.

Re: Tommie Graham mocks and insults citizens of Paulding County

Cobb has survived the furloughs thus far. No it isn't pretty or wonderful for the employees, but we've done it and will live to work another day. However the current recommendation from an independant board has suggested no more furlough days, especially for public safety.

I think the man could have presented his thoughts better. No one likes to be talked to like a child and I think that's what ticks some people off. MOST times it's not what you say, but how you say it. Let's just say he is not the master of communication.

I think it is the job of the elected official to keep these things in mind at all times, though. Yes, the job can be very frustrating. Yes, the people can be extremely frustrating. Absolutely, it is a no win job. But you have to know that going in and you have to be prepared to maintain a professional (and grown up) demeanor at all times, no matter how much you may want to stick out your tongue, thumb your nose, make faces, speak in goofy voices, etc. As an elected official, you are held to a higher standard at all times and must remember that .... no matter how "low level" you are in the big political picture. This may "just" be Paulding County politics but there is still a standard and he fell short in that moment.

If you want to hold an elected office at any level of government; you better have thick skin.

Re: Tommie Graham mocks and insults citizens of Paulding County

Apparently there aren't enough people patting him on the back in his opinion. Like you said, Fox, you have to have a thick skin. When he said that people gripe, then go home and do nothing for Paulding County, I take a little exception to that. Our $$$ do our part for Paulding County. What exactly would he like us to do while we're sitting around the house with our thumbs up our rear? (like that happens since the majority of us live in homes where both the husband and wife HAVE to work) Maybe Mrs. Reacher and I will go pick up trash on the roadway on my one day off with her this weekend....

NOT!

Exactly and he seems to have shown a thin spot.

I think what he was referring to was the lack of participation in being vocal with ideas to help improve the county's posture economically and infrastructurally. He communicated it poorly, I'll admit, but he does make a valid point. Too many people sit around and complain the BoC makes wrong decisions, but how many of those who complain actually attend a meeting or communicate with their commissioner to express their ideas for solutions? I would be willing to bet that less than 1% of those who constantly complain never do anything but complain. Most of us here had participated in another forum at one time where it didn't matter what the BoC approved, the vast majority just complained the BoC couldn't get anything right.

Prior to the BoC making the decision to construct a new government complex, they had discussed it at their public meetings for many, many months. How many people went to the meetings and voiced opposition to it? The issue was discussed by people on both sides of the issue at the other forum, but is that the same as contacting your commissioner or attending a meeting to express your opinion? Heck no. However, many at that forum expressed their opinion the commissioners should participate on that site as if it was a requirement to be a commissioner. Good grief. There's a reason why the BoC has on it's agenda a place for residents to express their opinions.

The former county chairman used to participate on that other forum, but look at how childish and rude members there treated him when they disagreed with him. That same behavior was expressed towards many of us and that's why this site was created.

There's an old adage that goes, "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem." When people don't participate in their local government by letting their voices be heard, then they leave that government entity to their own devices. Government will fail the people if the people don't get involved.

Re: Tommie Graham mocks and insults citizens of Paulding County

I sent an email to the BoC a while back. I NEVER got any form of response from the BoC. It was nearly 5 weeks after my initial email that I eventually got an email from someone completely unrelated to the BoC with a response to my initial email. Perhaps our BoC should look to themselves for some of the answers when wondering why more citizens aren't communicating with them.

just sayin'

Re: Tommie Graham mocks and insults citizens of Paulding County

I myself would prefer to see the BoC meetings held in the evening. While I lived in MI, the BoC there would hold them in the afternoon as well. Most people do work during the day.

Re: Tommie Graham mocks and insults citizens of Paulding County

The only interaction I've had with the BoC was via phone - Austin and Barnett have both returned my calls before. And yes, I do participate, but am unable to attend meeting most of the time. I just thought he was very unprofessional in his demeanor, and NO, I do not want my millage rate raised. In case I didn't make that clear before. ;)

I agree in many ways, but it shouldn't be limited to attending meetings in person, no more than they should stop by my house in person. There are people who work nights and couldn't go to meetings if they wanted to. I imagine many send mail and especially email these days, but as unionmom pointed out, how much attention does that get.

But you're very correct in this aspect. If you don't go and get RIGHT IN THEIR face where they can't avoid you, they won't hear. Otherwise they WILL avoid you. There is no excuse for that when a lot of people wouldn't be able to attend, such as myself. They have just as much an obligation to read their letters and emails and respond appropriately.
