Inequity of the “terrible history” of public school lunch programs

NYC School Kids Forced to Eat Free Lunches Even If They Can Afford to Pay — The Reason Is a Sign of the Times

The ship is sinking......

I like this comment: The lessons for today: Big Mother will always have free teats for you kids AND you will all be served the same thing, regardless of your circumstance, whether you like it or not,

There are whole states that do free lunch for all students. I do not think this is a bad thing. Too many children go without lunch, and yes our taxes are paying for everyone to eat, but those same taxes are paying for that same food that is thrown away every.single.day. When it comes to kids and eating...feed them. I do not care.

I worked in a title 1 school... Made me a skeptic when each day the kids would run to their backpack and get their snacks to take to lunch. Snacks that most middle income Americans can't afford because they are on a budget that does not allow for brand name Fruit Roll Ups, Ding Dongs, packs of Nutter Butter cookies etc... then at lunch they dump the entree, milk, and fruit... but they did eat the pudding or cookie that is in the Free lunch they were given by our government. Oh yeah ...and they dumped most of the FREE breakfast they did not eat either.

Loved the $100+ sneakers and polo clothing they wore too ... no reason to get off the government dole there. Or use their money in a way that would provide actual nutrition to their children.

My heart was a lot colder after that year. Did not see any true need, however the school tripped over itself to get them qualified for the free money they got for the kids and the lunch program.

In concept, I don't have a problem with funding school lunches for poor children.

However, I do have a problem with the government forcing children to eat GI chow or telling parents what they can or can't send for their kids to eat.

But there is a danger to the free lunch programs. As with any type of Social program; the more government does for people, the less they tend to do for themselves. So we might be making the problem of irresponsible parents even worse.

And I have to point out that if public schools operated with the efficiency of private schools; they would have plenty of tax dollars left over to feed the kids steak.

?? I do not get the point of them having name brand snacks? Or that they eat the cookie or pudding, but not the entree.

I am sorry you did not think there was a true need, but after seeing the need over and over for decades, I do and would support a program in Georgia. Will there always be people that take advantage of things, yes, but when it comes to feeding children, my heart does not have one cold spot. (and my wallet has been emptied more than once feeding them)

Is anyone forcing the kids to eat the school lunches? I did think it was just everyone was fed, no pay required, not required to eat it.

Back in the dark ages, we had a weekly or monthly punch card for school lunch. You didn't have to buy it, and you could pay cash for individual meals. The first week of each year was free lunch for everyone so nobody went hungry while paperwork was shuffled, and we were sent home with a weekly menu and a check-box form where you could pay weekly, monthly, or not pay at all. No children were aware of which kids didn't pay because they got a monthly card just like the rest . You could skip a week paying if things were tough, you could make it up next week, or not. Every Thursday the teachers took the forms up, in envelopes, and that was that. The system worked flawlessly as far as I could tell anyway. We never knew who was paying and who was not and there was never any bullying of a poor kid because he couldn't buy lunch.

Now I don't know how many kids payed and how many didn't. I do know that if you chose not to pay it was no questions asked. The school lunch program for the county was subsidized at something like 25% in the school budgets, but I don't think that was all no-pays, because even a cash lunch seemed cheap at the time so it was probably slightly subsidized.

My point is this. Why the heck subsidize a program at 100% when the vast majority of parents would voluntarily pay for their child's lunch and nobody (except a bean counter) would know who was paying and who was not? That seems absurd on the face of it.

lotstodo ... The kids punch in their personal number to a keypad type devise, the same number that, for instance, they check out their library books. Currently no one knows who pays for their lunch either...except the kids tell everyone they get free lunch...and breakfast.

The past three decades I have seen an increase in the abuse of tax money. I believe in a safety net for those unable, or temporarily in need of help. Providing free lunch for all students has nothing to do with helping families who need help.

Generations later it is the same people we were supposed to have helped get out of poverty - who instead don't have any reason to change the way their families have lived off the government.

Our society has lost its self sufficiency and pride in providing for themselves.

Or when a parent forgets or does not have money to pay, a lunch room worker takes their lunch throws it out and announces they have no money and can charge no more on their account.

Sorry, not trying to be disagreeable with this, but it is a huge pet peeve of mine. Children should not go hungry, and they do, and the schools should not ever refuse to feed a child or humiliate them. Some people ARE honestly broke, and have a lot of pride and do not fill out the forms to get free lunch, either at the beginning of the year or later. Other kids just have parents that stink. Not one situation or decision made that causes money to not be on the lunch account is the fault of the child. Feed them.

Stuff like this is just wrong. (No $ No lunch sign at a Bartow school. They took it down.)

This is one incident of many that have been reported in the news. There are many more not reported and witnessed by teachers, school workers, and children all over the country. (Do not get me wrong, most workers in the cafe are doing as told, and many have lost their jobs for going ahead and just giving a child their lunch.) I understand that many, many people do take advantage of the system, but seriously, a lunch at school is not going to break the system anymore then it is right now. No one can abuse this and sell it for tobacco, alcohol, drugs...it is a meal for a child.

I work in a Title 1 school. We have 76% of our student body receiving free lunches. I'm okay with that. We get free breakfast, for everyone. Students, staff, anyone who works or attends can have breakfast every morning for free.

On one hand, I agree with the sentiments above about need and priorities. A real Ralph Lauren Polo shirt is 80-120. Don't even get me started on the other clothes. And cars in the parking lot. However, there's no way to know who's getting what. Additionally, I would bet that alot of these "status" clothes are paid for by parents...who need to get their shit together, absolutely. But it's not the kid's fault their parents are morons and some of them are truly hungry. We also have a program for kids to get bag of groceries to take home on fridays to last the weekend.

As much as I hate welfare trash, I can't blame the children. I support these free meal programs. It's worth it, even if only a fraction of people truly need it. Hell, I need that free breakfast some days.

I have a hard time with programs like this. The compassionate side of me says we need to be helping people, especially children; but the pragmatic side of me says we're only fueling dependency on government.

I have a saying I coined: "When you remove responsibility from someone, you make them irresponsible". The more government does for people, the less they tend to do for themselves.

Clearly, we can't just cut these programs off; the sad reality is that children would go without eating. But I think we need to recognize that our society has some major problems, and start addressing those problems. A shockingly high percentage of parents just don't seem to care much about their children, and many of them are simply too selfish to make the sacrifices that are necessary for being a good parent. I saw a shocking amount of this back when my kid was in school. I would guess that less than one in five parents came out to support their children in extra-curricular activities. I can't tell you how many band and color guard kids I bought meals for, and how many of them I heard saying they wish their parents would watch them perform. It was very sad!

To make it worse; our economy has become one that requires most families to have dual incomes to make ends meet, and that typically means both parents have to work, which makes it difficult for parents to make their children priority. We have also become accustomed to living too high on the hog. Even people I see working at fast food places and using EBT cards usually have the latest smart phones with data plans and are wearing tennis shoes that cost upwards of $100 a pair. Add in out-of-control expenses such as healthcare, and it's very hard for young families to make it these days.

A lot of things are out of whack in our country, and too many people are turning to the government to address these issues with Socialist methods, when we should be going back to fix the root cause of them. Our economy needs to be restructured to produce more higher paying "career" type jobs so people will be able to support their families on a single income again. The lower paying service type jobs would remain mostly for younger people or those only looking for supplemental types of incomes. Meaning...people trying to support a family should be working better paying jobs in areas such as manufacturing, skilled trades, of professional positions; not fast food places or WalMart.

Our educational system is also in a mess. Too many kids are leaving high school almost illiterate, and certainly with no critical thinking skills whatsoever. Colleges have become more about milking the government and / or grant and scholarship programs, and many of the degrees they are handing out are virtually worthless. While some people should be going to college, a lot more should be pursuing an education in one of the trades. And yes, we need to put vocational training back into the high schools.

Most importantly...we somehow have to fix the American family. Divorce rates are horrible and breaking up families left and right, leaving children caught in the middle. We must return to the concept of husband and wife, together, being the foundation of the family, and devoting themselves to raising their children to he happy and well-adjusted adults. As mentioned above; that required parents to make sacrifices, but the returns are so worth it!!

And we must reverse course on the welfare state. It will take a generation to do this; but we must begin moving people away from the lifestyle of dependency and into a life of self-sufficiency. This will take some investment and a lot of education, but it can be done. But it will only work if we put reasonable limits on government assistance. Besides robbing people of their humanity; the welfare system is one of the main things that is ruining our economy. There simply aren't enough people working and earning salaries in our country to pay the bills, this is one of the main reasons why we have amassed such a huge national debt, and also partly why our tax rates are so high.

OK, enough of my sermon for today. :D

Pubby, is that you? :D Cliff notes version?

This is one issue that I won't argue against, if kids needs to eat before learning then let's feed them. Let's call it "an investment into our future." Remember, these little crumb eaters will be the ones funding your social security checks so let's fatten them up while we can. It's not like the government is going to save the money if we don't feed them.
