Third graders in in Gwinnett County, Ga., were given math homework Wednesday that asked questions about slavery and beatings...


...The question read, "Each tree had 56 oranges. If eight slaves pick them equally, then how much would each slave pick?"

Another math problem read, "If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week?"...

It was a silly move on the part of the educators who put it into the classroom. News of it has gone national and once again Georgia looks backward.

The elementary school teacher who resigned amid controversy over math homework problems referencing slavery wrote a letter to school officials saying he "cannot apologize enough."

Luis Rivera was a third-grade teacher at Beaver Ridge Elementary School since 2008.

Channel 2 Action News reporter Kerry Kavanaugh obtained Rivera’s personnel file through an open records request. It includes several past glowing reviews. It also revealed that Rivera had been a member of the Black History committee...

Just a bad situation all around. I must say that after reading that article it made me believe even more that it was just a lapse of judgment. I do not think it was intentional, he just was including the figure they were studying into the lesson and did not do it in a way that offense would not be taken.
