House squashes Marjorie Taylor Greene's motion to oust Speaker Johnson

Speaker Johnson is calling for unity in the party.

IMO, conservatives need to take a hard look at the GOP and decide what they want. I see many saying they want a Republican Party that is more conservative and consistent (which I agree with), yet it seems like many of the same people disagree with attempts from the more conservative members to pull the party that way. I think we all agree that the GOP is only a little better than the Democrats, but I also think we're sending mixed signals on what we expect from them.

Members of congress like Green and Gaetz, just to name two, are often unfortunate in their timing and tactics, but I don't think they are wrong in wanting to pull the party more to the right. Short of a viable 3rd party, the GOP is all we have to fix this mess, and it's not going to happen as long as we accept the mediocrity that the Republicans have been.

So I think we need to think long and hard about what we really want from the party.

I‘m not taking either side with MTG on this one but I will ask what positive contributions has the Speaker made since holding the position? I’m not not implying that he hasn’t made any, I‘m just not thinking of any.

I wouldn't want to be in his position. The House Republicans are too divided. I bet if they asked Newt to be Speaker he would turn it down. If he did take it, I don't think he would have much success either. Face it, there are some who want it there way and unfortunately, they are to the extreme right.

Many of us here have been rightfully complaining for years that the GOP establishment is little better than the Democrats; they tax and spend almost as much.

So now that we have some younger, more conservative members of congress trying to change that, why are we opposed to it?

Granted, they are lacking in tact (especially MTG), but are they wrong for wanting to make the party more fiscally conservative?

I don't think so.

You're never going to accomplish much when you alienate so many people in your party when you are like a bull in a China shop. That demonstrates poor leadership because it's not influencing anyone. How MTG and the others like her are acting is only causing further division among the House Republicans.

I guess my question is, what if MTG is right? I'm not saying she is, I'm just raising the possibility. I can't say I'm impressed with Johnson, he's done nothing that I'm aware of which would cause us to be proud he is Speaker. Just more of the same same same, IMO.

How much do you think any Republican can accomplish as Speaker when the House Republicans are divided like they are? What we have is two factions of the House Republicans who are not willing to compromise with each other. Those on the extreme right are calling those who don't agree with them RINOs. Personally, if they can't unite, they stand a good chance of losing the majority this November. Who will they blame?

There are two ways to deal with division

1) Placate and compromise

2) Lead

Which is best?

Naturally it's to lead, however, MJT and those to the far right like her didn't want Johnson to begin with, so he was behind the 8 ball to begin with. It would have been the same for anyone from the far right who became Speaker.

The only way to get a balanced budget amendment passed is to go through the States. Every Republican Rep and and Senator needs to push the legislatures' in their states to hold a Constitutional convention.

Not sure I'd call MTG and Gaetz far right. I think they are better classified as Trumpists and we know Trump has moved left over the years so I wouldn't consider him far right either.

There are far left and moderate democrats in the dem party but they have figured out that they have to generally work together to get things done. Republicans can't seem to figure this part out quite as well.

But Johnson is not leading, he's compromising. Yeah, a speaker probably has to do some of that, but he's giving the Dems almost everything they want. Nancy Pelosi even voted to keep him.

At some point, if we want the GOP to get better, someone in the party needs to lead a revolution of sorts within the party. And I think that's what MTG and a few others are trying to do, but they are being painted as troublemakers. Granted, MTG, in particular needs to work on her methods, but as for issues, I find myself agreeing with her most of the time.
