Homemade Instant Hot Cocoa Mix

Madea

zip a dee doo dah
I've been on a mission to create our own homemade hot cocoa mix. I had powered sugar, Hershey's cocoa and powered milk (which has gotten REALLY expensive, btw). My first go, the kids didn't like. Too much of an unsweetened cocoa taste and (apparently) not enough sugar. I had subbed my powered sugar (for easier mixing) for the sugar in the recipe. Well, as I found out, you can't simply substitute powdered sugar for white sugar (multiply by 1.75 for future reference for those who may wonder).

Have you tried it?

I just use Swiss Miss.

Thanks!

Generally, you can find that for $1/box. That wasn't possible (since I was late to the grocery store) during this last storm. :)) And I've been eliminating as much processed stuff as I can. But, kids still like hot cocoa when it's cold/snowing outside. However, the recipe used powered milk, so I'm not sure what I'm really eliminating. :dunno

But why? I'm sure you have all the ingredients ... hiding behind the quinoa and canned tomatoes.

How many times must I say it?
That is looking at food, not eating food.
You know, like those soaps shaped like roses in the bowl on the back of the commode or the nice fluffy towels in the other bathroom.

this is the recipe I use

¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
½ cup granulated sugar
? cup hot water
? tsp salt
4 cups milk (Dairy or non-dairy)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

I have made my own for years (mostly because I always had the ingredients on hand :)) ) and even made them as gifts for husband to pass out at work. (I made individual ones in covered mugs for that and all they had to do was add hot milk and they had the drink and cup to keep.) If you are making it like the packets I would not use powered milk. You can just add your mix to milk..soy, almond, coconut. Plus you can make up a big batch and have it in a container for the kids to get as wanted. Woohoo on trying to get rid of processed foods! It is not easy but worth it!

What is this! No one has listed Godiva Chocolate liquor as a major ingredient!?!?!?!?

And you folks call yourselves cooks ...

If I am drinking hot chocolate rest assured it is in there. :))

What's your recipe? I was looking for something quick that the kids could do quickly themselves (other than the packets). And you're right, if they are making with milk, then the powered milk won't be necessary. And that has as much crap as the packets. :))

That sounds good! And I have all that stuff. :)) But, I'd have to make it. I don't see the kids taking the time to add vanilla. Although that makes it yummy!

I found some recipes using Nestle Quick, now where's the benefit in that? ::)

I start with this basic recipe:

3 1/2 c. sugar
2 1/4 c. cocoa
1 T. salt

Add two tablespoons to a cup of warm/hot milk.

You can also add:
mini marshmallows
any type of mini chips (chocolate, white, mint)
a vanilla bean pod
cinnamon (This is really good. Tastes like Mexican hot chocolate)

Any can be added when you make the mix, the kiddos do not have to add it later, though they could. :)

:popcorn I'm just watching because y'all would bust a gut if I even tried to say I had a recipe!

I have recipes for stuff I do not even eat. Heck I love baking and yet do not eat it. :dunno

Yes, but you use the thing in the kitchen that makes fire.

I was obviously making this way more complicated than it needed to be. :))
