Giving names to the worst winter storms

The worst winter storms in the US will now be named! I think this will be a great idea. I love my Nixel alerts (that include weather alerts.) I like the idea of knowing exactly which weather system they are talking about.

The cable channel announced Tuesday that it will give names to the worst winter storms much like the National Hurricane Center does for tropical storms.

Naming winter storms will raise awareness, which will lead to more pro-active efforts to plan ahead, resulting in less impact on the public overall…

Niziol wrote that winter storms are commonly given names in Europe, but he said that the lack of a single authority over winter storms in the United States, like the hurricane center is the central authority on tropical storms, is one reason why the winter blasts are not named.
That's where the Weather Channel thought it could step in.

<snip>
Naming winter storms will also make it easier to provide info about them in the age of social media.

"On the occasion that different storms are affecting separate parts of the country, naming storms will allow for clearer communications," he said.

So what names will we see for the winter of 2012-2013? Well, let's just say the Weather Channel is going Greek, at least partly.

Athena tops the A-to-Z list with Zeus at the end. In between are Triton, Draco, Plato and Euclid.

<snip>
the names should be better than the monikers informally bestowed upon winter weather now, such as "Snowmageddon" or "The President's Day Storm.,"

Although I am partial to TWC having been employeed there for severals years all I see this as is a marketing ploy. From reading an article about this earlier today, the NWS won't even comment about it. TWC does not have "national" authority to name storms that other weather media outlets need to go by. The only "clearer communications" would be within NBC (owner of TWC) affiliates, not accuweather, ABC, CBS, CNN, etc weather news feeds. JMO

There have been a few notorious storms that earned their nicknames. I think it should remain that way. Not every winter storm is deserving of a place in history, but names would sure look good on TWC's Twitter feed, a thought which I am sure led to this idea.

I agree with both of you... it IS a way for TWC to be relevant and lord over all other weather broadcasters (accuweather, ABC, CBS, CNN, etc weather news feeds,) handing out names...

However, I do think it would make it easier for people to talk about a particular storm not just ... "...you remember the snow we had in 1999 that also closed down New York?" :dunno

I like the idea... maybe they can figure out the logistics so it's not just TWC who gets the say so?

Ironic. Starting with primarily Greek names.

No. Start with Hillary, and go from there. :D

TWC lost me a long time ago. They are SO into their little "weathertainment" world. And just for the record, Jim Cantore is still a big ol' girl. Hrmph.

Aren't storms Bush's fault?

Of course. Out of respect, we should just skip the "A" and name the first one "Bush".

Get with the program, people!!! Hillary! should be the first one. Then Janet Reno the second, then Nancy Pelosi the third, etc.

Nah, :waggingfinger …with their egos, they will just think it is a good thing to have a destructive storm named after you… more fuel for their narcissistic ego!

GAH!!! How did I not see this obvious flaw?!?!? I bow to your superior intellect.

So, let us collectively come up with our own list of names for future snowstorms. :laugh I think it's a good idea to name major snowstorms like they do hurricanes......but please let the NWS take the lead on that, not media networks.

Okay, start us a thread. :)) But, if a snowstorm gets named Frosty, I don't think folks will take it as a serious threat! :))
