cooking classes

Um, won't giving your parents (or inlaws) cooking classes get you in some serious trouble?
if I gave my mom in law $10,000 she would still find fault with it

so I am at a loss

:(
Something will come to me, or Lisa will toss out another fabulous website, :)) it just needs to be soon. (at least for her birthday gift...I only have 2 1/2 weeks!)

I haven't read this whole thread because, well I was too lazy too. So forgive me if this has already been covered ... does she have a Hobby Lobby near her? I noticed that you mentioned she sews ... Hobby Lobby has some of the most gorgeous fabrics, fabrics that I haven't found in any other stores. I don't know how you or she feel about gift cards but one to Hobby Lobby ... she could get some amazing fabric and any notions that she may need.

We are not allowed to do gift cards. :BH I am hoping HoneyBunny sees my question to her about sewing items. There has to be something awesome and new to have, I just have no clue when it comes to sewing.

How much and what kind of sewing does she do?

Lots. Pillows, curtains, blankets, costumes for the grands, she embroiders stuff too. (Initials on things like blankets.) I guess on her same machine? I have no clue.

What is the expectation level with regard to her birthday gifts? That could have a lot to do with how a sewing gift box could/would be received. Threads, bias tapes, needles, if she has fabrics that she likes, etc. Pillow forms/stuffing (though that's getting a bit awkward to ship) ...

She says not to get her anything....but our first gift to her was a pearl ring that a nice Buckhead jeweler gave husband a deal on. Well for years after we did; necklaces, bracelets, earrings to match. We switched to diamonds after that. (nothing huge, just nice)
We did all that because she was alone after FIL died and husband felt he should. She has since remarried so we scaled back on doing all the jewelry, but did not want to seem cheap and uncaring of her birthday now that she is married and get her slippers either.

Do you know her taste well enough to include some fabrics, too? It just seems to me that by putting together a nice collection of sewing stuff you're showing that you care about and notice what she likes. You'd want to be careful to be sure that it is truly something that she enjoys for herself and not something that she feels any degree of obligation to do for others.
