First Day of School

I've finished my first day of school today. I'm very hoarse (I don't talk this much during the summer).

We're getting some larger classes in the high school again. I have 37 in Biology! (Still not up to what it was when I started, but looking up.) My Chemistry and Physics are smaller, but they're also pulling from smaller classes. (28 seniors and 30 juniors) I only have 14 little 8th graders in Algebra 1, but that is a small class (in the 20s somewhere, but I don't know for sure).

I'm thrilled that my creepy/talkative colleague is gone. I had to leave early for a dentist appointment, so I returned to work later in my room. My creepy/talkative colleague wasn't there to babble and prevent me working. His replacement is so much more professional. He has discipline in his classroom! The woman next door to him thinks he's wonderful. Only a curtain divides the two rooms, so she really bore the brunt of the lousy discipline in the creepy/talkative man's room. And, thanks to some issues with the schedule, pre-calculus had to be split into 2 sections this year. He took one, she still has the other. He will actually do a good job. The creepy/talkative man would not. (I know the new math teacher from classes I took, so I actually do have some idea about him.)

Of course, I've already been reminded that I like teaching because of the students. Once a teacher learns to manage a classroom, students really aren't a big challenge overall (some individuals are). The adults in the school are the real difficulty. I'm already annoyed with a few colleagues i the elementary school.

Congrats on your first day!

And I can tell from your posts, you are an EXCELLENT teacher. I've worked with children all my life. They are my heartbeat, so I consider myself and expert! :taunt

Congrats on your first day!! I'm shocked at your class sizes though - there are only 15 kids in the princess's kindergarten class. I know public schools are a lot larger, but I'm not sure how a teacher can manage 37 kids in one class!!!

Sorry, I wasn't clear! They're split into 2 sections.

But, I have taught classes this large before. I once taught Trigonometry to a class of 46. I guarantee that there was almost no individual attention paid to students in that class and absolutely no creative teaching techniques. Lecture and individual seat work while I tried to get around to answer questions. It was all I could do with that many kids in a room. I would never teach a lab course to that many students.

You have a wide range of classes!

My kids went back August 1 and I must say I'm STILL happy about this school year! It's such a blessing after last year! :cheer1

Agreed. We didn't have the issues you did, but it's always nice, after asking, "How was your day?" to hear, "Really good!" after two and a half weeks.

:)

I wish all teachers had the same passion you seem to have. Now THAT would make a difference in our upcoming generation!

(Not dissing our teachers but without that inner passion to teach, they seem to get burned out quickly while remaining in the profession)
