Exciting News!

Check it out – two posts, one day. (a few of you may get this reference – if you do, you’re a dirty bird)
Anyways – I am so excited to announce that I am organizing a class to teach Junior Achievement to homeless teens at a transitional housing charity!

Whoop! I’m super excited. My ‘story’ is one of rags to riches and sheer determination and perseverance. I’m bringing along my favorite girl from my department who shares a similar story of leaving her parent’s hippie goat farm and putting herself through college.

I’m SO excited! The kids are teens and they are living in transitional housing for homeless mothers. The average stay is 4 months and during that time the organization really focuses on trying to educate the teens and break the pattern. The “moms are the moms”, but they believe that the education provided to the children at the facility is what’s key.

Last Saturday, we did a day of work and really had a lot of fun. They give people a second chance, but it’s a second change with dignity. Anyways – happy days!

Good for you!

Congratulations!! That sounds like a lot of fun and a wonderful opportunity for the girls!

That is exciting and sounds like a wonderful adventure. I am sure you and the girls will all benefit. It's great that you do this.

Very cool! I always said if I won the lottery- one of the things I'd do is open a home for unwed mothers. Very cool.

Wow. That is truly fantastic. My little brain just can't wrap itself around "The kids are teens and they are living in transitional housing for homeless mothers." Ye gods. I salute you, my friend. I'm sure you know that studies have shown that sometimes when a kid comes from a bad home environment, it just takes one person somewhere in that child's life to believe in and encourage them to make a drastic difference in the paths they choose. This is, indeed, the Lord's work.

Indeed it is. The teens are both male and female, so I will definitely be bringing my guy friends. My husband is even considering helping their mentor program because boys rarely become the men they should be if they don't have a positive male role model.

I'm super excited and I hope that I'm okay at it and that I can recruit enough folks to help! EEks!

If you have time on a Thursday morning please try to make a meeting with the PC Children's Cabinet. You may find some volunteers. PM me if you are interested.

How very exciting!! Good for you. I have spent the last 20+ years working with Scouts. I cannot tell you how rewarding it is to see these kids grown into responsible adults. Strong role models are soooooo important. I applaud and admire you for taking on this adventure.

Like you I came from very humble beginnings to making a pretty good life for me and my kids. Had its ups and downs but I never gave up, I still think it's from my 2 years as a youth in Girl Scouts. You will be such an inspiration and your legacy will impact many generations!!
