Do you self diagnose?

I'm Floored

Lover of BS!
I do it ALL the time. I'm not one of those to look for the worst diagnoses and be sure that I'm dying, but I tend to find enough information out there to be pretty sure what's really going on and the best method of treatment. And I don't charge myself nearly as much as my doctor!

I have achy joints. I have for at least the last 15 years. I was a dancer in my younger days, so I was rather unkind to my body. Usually, I just look at the pain as a consequence for all those years.

In the last few weeks, I've noticed pain in one wrist (more than usual) but I've paid no attention to it. Over the last few days, it has become quite a nuisance, and I'm unable to ignore it. And then last night, I noticed a knot on top of my wrist. I certainly can't ignore that!

So, I've researched it. I'm pretty sure it's a ganglion cyst. So, I've called the doctor and made an appointment to see what I need to do. :dunno

I did read that online! It said most people use a Bible, which is why they call ganglion cysts "Gideon's Disease" (which I have heard of, but didn't know what it was!)

I don't think I have it in me to smack myself. Plus, it's my dominant wrist, so if I get the courage to do it, I don't know if my left hand would be strong enough to do the job!

I'm not a doctor, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express recently.

I totally self diagnose, but I'm not very good at it. According to my diagnoses, I should have died from multiple diseases and disorders...

That's good, too! You're a walking miracle!

I concur with the ganglion cyst diagnosis. You may also have carpal tunnel syndrome, which, contrary to popular opinion, is not just caused by repetitive motion (typing, guitar playing, etc.). I read a thing put out by the Miami Hand Center several years ago that stated that one of the major causes of carpal tunnel syndrome in women is hormones (pregnancy, menopause). My sister had it TERRIBLY in both hands when she was prego, and I have had it in my left hand since the beginning of perimenopause.

So, as you can see, yes, I do self-diagnose. To the point where I finally had to ban myself from WebMD on account of I found out I was dying from a brain tumor, other cancer in the body, heart attack, and ALS all at the same time. (You think I am kidding, but I can assure you I am not. And yes, I do have anxiety/panic issues. :sigh: )

I self diagnose all the time, and I'm usually right. Of course having a long line of family in the medical field doesn't hurt. :D

I used to do that all the time! I will not go on webmd anymore. I had myself dieing of all kinds of stuff. Now I just ignore whatever is wrong till I can't ignore it anymore. That's just being stubborn which I am ;D

lawd... I went to webmd and ended up in the er..I was fine webmd just freaked me out. Now Chad tells me I am not allowed to visit that site cause he can't afford it

I knew I liked you. ;)

Well, if I had to have a problem, this is a good one. One of my best friends is a Hand Specialist, so she's on the case! :thumbsup

My mother, who had to quit school at the 9th grade to go to work in the cotton fields and who has never studied medicine, is capable of diagnosing people over the phone.
And the people who have the illness do not have to be the people she is talking to.
You can just tell her about the symptoms of someone and she will start giving you her diagnoses.
I kid her all the time about it, saying; "why does anyone ever go to the doctor when all they have to do is call you."
Her reply is always the same; "well, I am right more times than not aren't I?"
And she is. I would say she is right over 90% of the time.
Strange but true.

I had problems with one of these on the palm of my hand for four years.

The doctor will give you two options... drain it with a needle or surgery.

In my case surgery was not an option (risk of nerve damage) and mine
eventually mysteriously disappeared one day after years of severe pain.

Good luck.

Well, I just called and canceled my appointment with Dr. Maguire, because my friend wants me to see her hand surgeon. So....we'll see.

But I did feel pretty special to call his office and tell them the doctor had told me to call and fit me in at a certain day and time! :hiya

I do self diagnose, at times. About 6 to 7 years ago I said I have sinus issues. Dr after Dr said nothing was wrong. I gave up and just dealt with the headaches and sinus issues for years. FINALLY, I got a Dr that knows what he is doing. I will have much needed surgery in Nov. He did the antibiotics, a CT and follow up. Great bed side manner. Even the hubster liked him and is so relieved that an end to this long term issue is quickly coming to an end.

I wish you luck, IF. :hug

You must have gone to Blondie's doctor...he told her it was not sinus problems. So now every time she gets sick, she says her "not sinus" is acting up. :D
