It is a frightening sight in Japan. Fights breaking out as people try to get gas and to get to higher ground as they brace for this. Hawaii and 20 other countries in the path of the possible Tsunami. Yes, the US is one of them. This is bad!!!

Widespread fires burned out of control. Tsunami warnings blanketed the entire Pacific, as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire U.S. West Coast.

Authorities said at least 40 people were killed and 39 missing after the magnitude 8.9 offshore quake unleashed a 23-foot (7-meter) tsunami. The quake was followed by at least 19 aftershocks, most of them of more than magnitude 6.0. The death toll was likely to continue climbing given the scale of the disaster.

I was born at the US military base in Sendai, Japan.

Just getting around to checking on news stories and was floored by this one.

Lots of details will get updated as the day goes on but it seems the initial title on this one, as reported by the MSM, was misleading. Not the largest every recorded anywhere. Still absolutely massive, though.

Re: Largest Earthquake (8.9) Ever Recorded Hits Japan Causes Tsunami

I've been watching the news since 6am and they said that this is actually the 5th largest ever recorded. They are saying now that the death toll is up to 50 and that the tsunami is hitting Hawaii now.

I heard Oahu is expecting a 3' tidal wave.

I lived there for a couple of years as a child. I remember the fear of earthquakes and standing in a door frame while the dishes were being thrown from the cabinets by mild ones. Mother was told the safest place was under the door frames because they were the strongest part of the house. The pictures from there today are horrifying.

Well excuse me for that it was the first report I heard on it. I will change that part!

Re: Largest Earthquake (8.9) Ever Recorded Hits Japan Causes Tsunami

My Dad was there from '54-'57. Mom got there in '55 and I was born there in '57. Mom said they had one small earthquake that didn't cause any damage while they were there. She said that was a good thing because they lived on the local economy and the homes weren't as well constructed as those on the base. I was 5-months old when we went back to the states. She put a tag on me for the trip back that said, "Made in Japan" because she thought my grandparents would get a chuckle out of it.

I remember learning that in school growing up and that is exactly where me and my family were during the San Francisco earthquake of '89.

Oh my! CNN just said that they have a report that they have now found 200-300 bodies in Sandai (sp?), which is where they showed the water going into the farmlands.

I fear it is going to get far worse.

The devastation there is unbelievable. I, too, fear the death toll is going to be much higher - possibly into the thousands. I do think they have said this is the largest earthquake ever recorded for Japan.

The waves are heartbreaking to watch. You can see that nothing in their paths will be untouched.

My prayers are with all those affected.

A number of the major news networks were reporting it like that earlier on. It happens a lot when they are racing to beat each other to the story.

I think that's why some of them have started adding disclaimers on their breaking news posts online now.

Just heard from my DIL in Hawaii. My son is stationed there, but he's in Iraq right now. She said their house is not in the evacuation area, so they're good. Thank God!
