Cobb BOE Votes To Restore Traditional School Calendar

Apparently the 3 newly elected BOE members did what they promised to do. The meeting was contentious at times from what I was told.
The Cobb school board voted 4-3 Thursday night to revert to a more traditional school calendar, with an Aug. 15 start state. I wonder if the Paulding BOE has any plans to revisit the same issue?

I would much rather have a traditional school calendar. However, I would choose to start school the day after Labor Day. This would give those high school students who work at seasonal jobs like Six Flags more time to earn money for college.

I agree!

The majority in Cobb appear to be unhappy (according to the news).
I think that could read "the majority of the parents at the meeting were unhappy". I have found that it is the folks who care strongly about an issue that show up. The new BOE members did what their constituents wanted them to do. It would appear that was to vote for the traditional calender.

You are correct. It appeared the biggest gripe was about child care. I really don't get that!

A very vocal group in Cobb made themselves heard. When the old members did not listen they voted in new ones! :whistle

Supposedly the overwhelming majority of those that voted, voted for the "balanced" schedule. The board ignored the vote and went with the later start date because, according to them, the earlier "balanced" schedule ends up costing more and they had to make cuts wherever they could. Also looks like a recall effort is underway for those board members.

The balanced schedule is better for learning but it is not better for the budget. It'll be interesting to see what happens to our start date for next year as our board starts to look at how ugly our cuts are going to have to get yet again.

They'd have to show me how the "balanced" schedule saves money over the traditional schedule, because I just don't see it. I think they'd save more money if they went to the traditional schedule with school starting the day after Labor Day.

I said the balanced costs more. Balanced is better for learning, the later start date is better for the budget.

It will be interesting to see who is telling the true facts about this. Three new members, who voted on the traditional calender, campaigned on the issue and won. I doubt the recall will come anywhere near succeeding. JMO

I'd come home from school and my Dad would say "Well, did you learn anything or are they making you come back tomorrow" ;D

Did he have to ask that at the end of 12 years? ::) :whistle

According to the news bit that I saw (and I'll try to dig something up on this to link) the online voting results were near 70% in favor of the balanced schedule. Those results were released at the meeting. They also reported and showed an interview with some folks stating that only 100 votes were need to start the recall process and they said they had more than that number there that night. I guess we'll see what happens. Folks may see the finances had to win and they'll settle down or they may very well continue the fight. I happen to be a fan of what they call the balanced schedule. My kids like the balanced schedule. It is far better for learning and it doesn't take a genius to see that. But it also doesn't take a genius to see that what they call the traditional schedule is less expensive and with budgets like they are we have to do whatever it takes to keep our kids' educations intact.

It's going to get worse before it gets better.

You are correct that some reports show that with over 82,000 respondents to the on line voting about 72% favored the balanced calendar. I wonder if those folks are adamant enough to vote to recall any of the members who voted for the change. It will be interesting because I think the Paulding BOE is having some of the same discussions about the calender with parents in the county.

I'll be honest. I've never understood (while I may appreciate it) the concept of asking the parents and employees what calendar they prefer. First of all, there's NO way to make everyone happy. Second, the leadership (in this case the board) needs to make decisions based on financial responsibility and what's best for the students. Period.

No one's preferences (including mine) should influence those kinds of decisions. I really feel this type of "leading" has a part in the problems we see now. People are afraid to lead and make the hard decisions without taking others' feelings into consideration.

Okay, that may be a BROAD generalization - but I just get tired of hearing everybody whine about not getting their way!

I agree with you. It should be about the budget at this point and educating the children with the money available has to be the biggest factor. For everything you get you have to give up something else. The calender Cobb voted for saves money. Parents and other BOE members there need to hang onto that thought.
