Almost every time I go through immigration at Hartsfield airport, I am asked how much money I am carrying on me. I cringe each time because 1.) I don't know down to the dollar and 2.) because it is an intrusive question. After reading this topic, now I'm will worry about it being seized as well.
The question of international travelers is because of illegal off-shore accounts, not because of drugs ... though now they tie it to terrorism. But everything is somehow terrorism connected, right? LOL!!

Basically, if I carry over 10k, i have to declare it. So in turn, the IRS is made aware of it and I'm sure eventually be taxed. I have to declare to the IRS my foreign bank accounts anyway. That's why it irritates me even more. There is no reason to disclose how much money I have on me to the Border agent since I've already had to fill out a form stating so prior to the inane questioning. Just yet another government intrusion. Now I'll wonder each time if they are going to decide it is drug related since I'm coming from a Central American country.

Drugs and terrorism are sometimes very closely tied. Afghanistan=opium/heroin=terrorism.

I know they can be. I was being a smarta$$ since darn near everything the Govt tries to pile on top of us this last decade+ has been "for our safety" in the fight against terrorism.
