Cherokee County Schools Being Sued Over Graduation Location

An Atlanta school district could face a lawsuit following a decision to not move its graduation ceremony from a local church.

The Cherokee County School Board voted Thursday night not to move its graduation ceremony from First Baptist Church of Woodstock, MyFoxAtlanta.com reports.

School officials have said the church offers the most space and would cost only $2,000 for all of the county's commencement ceremonies.

A national advocacy group called Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, however, has threatened to sue the district unless it finds a non-religious venue for the ceremony.

I saw this on the news last night. I think it is sad! This is an inexpensive place that is big enough for their graduations. It's not like they are going to be preaching at the graduations ceremonies!

It's just a group of pissants who want to turn it into a political issue of seperation of church and state. The liberals don't want to rule by majority except for when they are the majority. When they are the minority they think they rule.

I find it ridiculous and a waste of taxpayer money. Folks should rise up against the AU for what they are costing already strapped school systems.

cherokee co. boe board

good for the cherokee board of education to have their graduation ceremonies at the church. it is a graduation ceremony, not a church service. interesting that the govt. used churches for emergencies in lieu of the floods anddisplaced families. also, interesting that some schools will have beginning churches at their schools because they don't have buildings yet. whoever opposes this ceremony needs to step back and see this a good thing.

Political Correctness at it's finest. A law suit against the school system would happen because a couple of people want to feel important and control all of the others. What a shame.

When they have graduations at other venues, they need to find out what the owner of that venue believes and protest it. It's ridiculous!

This church they're renting for graduation ceremonies is the only place large enough to hold that many people inside. From my understanding, they don't want to hold the ceremonies in the high school football stadiums because if it rains, they don't have a large enough alternative site inside.

The church is charging them only $2,000 to use their facilities, whereas it would cost them $40,000 to use a commercial facility outside the county. I see the justification as saving $38,000 of school district money and keeping the graduation ceremonies in the county.

I know somewhere in the US, some liberal read this article or saw it on the news (since it did become a national story) and is probably asking a conservative, "How would you feel if they were holding these ceremonies in a mosque?" They wouldn't be holding them in a mosque because the Islamic religion prohibits anyone who is not Muslim from entering a mosque. Now I'm sure if the liberal was told this, his/her response would be, "But what if they did allow non-Muslims in the mosque?" Then that would be a straw man's argument, but they would think it a "logical" response.

This group who is suing to prevent the graduation ceremonies from taking place in this church must believe the majority of people must conform to desires of the few. That's not how our Founding Fathers intended things. The candidates with the majority of the votes win; not the one with the fewest. Bills are passed or defeated by a majority. Proposals on ballots are passed by a majority.

This will be interesting to follow in the news.

The part that really ticks me off is the Jewish girl who began the fray with her comments that she "couldn't" attend her graduation because it was in a church. What about the TONS of family members who couldn't attend if it were in a smaller location? My graduation was held in the gym and you were issued tickets. Everyone the same amount. If your family was bigger, too bad. Special person that you wanted to attend. Too bad.

Let her parents then pay the $40K to have it someplace else.
