Changing jobs (tap tap tap)

I have an interview on Thursday. A company that’s been courting me for a while. I’m just seriously struggling with whether or not to change jobs again. My current company is falling apart. We’re having a huge exodus of staff, but I do have great flexibility. There’s just such little focus and I’m not sure if the writing is on the wall. We’re financial sound, but really lack a lot in the sales team.

The other company is also great, but it’s your typical ‘big company’. Publicly traded, leader in the industry, etc. But do I really want to go back to that type of bureaucracy? I’m unfulfilled and unfocused, but I’m also getting tired in my old age. I’m really teetering on just going out on my own, but to do that my husband has to get a job – and he wants to flip houses.

I want to help him live his dream, but I also am exhausted. I could easily make 30% or more as a consultant, but I need the stability of medical insurance, etc. This will require him to get a job. So, stay in high growth/poor management, move to being a corporate slave, or tell my husband that I’m going to start contracting full time?

I will start by saying I do not know you and you really need to sit down with your husband and discuss this. That said, if you have flexibility, and the company is financially sound I would not leave it for a huge corporation where you can easily become just an employee. Insurance wise, you could look into purchasing your own if you truly desire to work for yourself, though that would probably negate the extra money you made, but if that is what you really want it could be worth doing. :dunno

Aren't you Amber? :)

no, she isn't Amber... I talked to her for over a year just to realize I have known her for years

LOL! And here I thought...

I don't know what I still have the energy for at this point in my life. Once upon the time, I wanted it all. Now adays, I feel like I just want to be a corporate cog that flies under the radar.

Which was funny! Especially when I thought you knew.

Amber is Copschick. She doesn't post much. :( She is too busy becoming a nurse. :)

And thank God she is...

Thanks for the advice. I do need to do something. I guess we'll see how the interview on Thursday goes. I'm asking them for an assload of money, mostly because I don't really need or want the job. If they want me, they'll pay it and then I'll have some serious thinking to do...

I like working from home too, and it does have a value to me. But, when you're the pillar?? Money talks.

I decided to discuss with him over lunch, at which point he told me that I wasn't the woman that he married because I shouldn't be considering a job on the other side of the county that will result in a longer commute.

Sigh. That was terrible....

And I think I'm going to have to work late tonight.

i would drive a few extra miles for a bigger paycheck

As you can imagine, it's not completely that black and white - and I'm not going to put all the gory details out here (nor do I have an disillusions that any of you care about reading them), but I should have just massaged the truth a bit more to make this look like a more favorable idea. Or better yet, HIS idea.

I didn't. Crash. Burn. Oh well.

So, next question, are you going to cancel the interview or go and see what happens and then re-approach him on the theory that if they offer you a lot more money, he may change his tune?

I'm going on the interview. Worst case, my interview skills stay fresh and I increase my network. Best case, they give me the huge increase I'm going to ask for and I deal with it then

I told hubby that he can't *really* have a dog in the fight unless he's willing to work a full time job with benefits. Until then, someone has to make sure we have dental, medical and a 401K. Those things are simply not optional in life.

He told me we could be dirt poor, as long as we have each other. But I've been dirt poor, I've stood in food stamp lines and I've been to the health department for immunizations. Sorry, but I'm not going back.

I agree with you. Been there and done that. I also agree with Shoe Diva and will add that in this economy a "bird in the hand is worth two in the bush". You guys don't turn that old saying into something ugly now!

You're doing the right thing by going on the interview. I never turn down an opportunity to gather more information. Also, see if they have telecommuting days...something like 2-3 days a week could be a boon. I agree with you otherwise.
