Can you really be a Christian Democrat?

LisaC

I'm here to spin the moral compass.
I believe that you can. I know lots of strong Christian folks who are Democrats, but as I passed a car this morning with a "Christian Democrat" bumper sticker, I thought this would be a good topic for the board. What do you think folks?

God never told us what political party we should join. God is interested in what we do and what we believe.

There are some on the Republican side who will tell you that Christian faith is incompatible with being a Democrat, but they're either not thinking it through or they're trying to push party. And, it is certainly in Republicans' interest to convince people about this. Interestingly, the Democrats have been suggesting that Jesus was a Democrat because of giving to the poor and such.

What I look for are politicians who want to maximize freedom. That way I can be free to life my life and others can be free to live their lives. Party is just a way to avoid thinking about who we're voting for, and both parties want us to vote party line, not to think about it. And too many people want to accept that convenient shorthand: "My party good, their party bad."

There are certainly things on the Democratic side that God does not approve of. But, the Republicans have a few as well. That's why we need to look beyond the Republican shorthand of "Gays, guns, and abortion." Parties want power, and I think that's why some of our founders warned against them.

I've never understood how Catholics, in particular, could reconcile some of their votes. But I don't believe faith and party affiliation have to go hand in hand.

When Democrats tell me I can't be Christian and vote Republican, I respond that Jesus didn't tell me to send my money to the government and let them help others. He specifically instructed ME to do it.

A good argument could be made on whether or not a Christian should vote for either democrats or republicans (capitalization purposely omitted) as both have shortcomings in the eyes of God. Since we're talking about worldly leaders I think we, as Christians, can vote for either party, or neither, as long as we don't mind suffering the consequences while we're here.

On a related note, I wonder if God's prayer hotline gets overloaded just prior to or just after national elections?

Sure. Nobody is perfect :dunno

I've met plenty of nice, Christian people who were misguided and politically ignorant. Ain't a crime.

I do not ever pass judgment on whether another person has a personal relationship with God/Jesus. I'll pass judgment on their character, their behavior, their beliefs (as they describe them), but whether a person is a Christian is not for me to decide. Therefore, my answer is yes.

Thank you (she said humbly). :)

I see the point that is implied; some of the planks of the Democratic party would seem to be at odds with Christian beliefs.

But are any of us without sin or pure of thought? No. And do any of us have a 100% accurate understanding of God's word? I think not.

So I am going to say yes.

I will also point out that what the Republicans have turned into might not be all cool with God either.
