Braves to build new stadium in Cobb

I have mixed feelings on this announcement. Will make going to the games more convenient for us but I can't help but think of all the waste involved. Turner Field isn't that old and, in my opinion, is more than adequate to meet their needs. Billion dollar Falcon stadium and now a new one for the Braves while abandoning Turner Field. I guess I'm wrong, we must be in boom times instead of facing financial disaster. I need to get with the program.

I have wondered the exact same things! (And wondered if I was the only one wondering)

Let's just say what it really is: East Cobb elites pushing for convenience (and a big slice of the money pie) while keeping them from having to deal with downtown Atlanta and all the adventure it brings. I mean it's definitely a huge gain for Cobb but just think of its affect on Fulton and the downtown area. Just going to speed up the decaying process.

So is this a public/provate partnership where the public gets the debt and the privite gets the profits? The devil is in the details. Other than that, I think it's a great thing for Cobb. The Braves have been tired of the "fan experience" outside of Turner Field far more than the field itself. "Fan Experience" is the term they use when the stadium is bordered on 3 sides by ghetto, there is virtually no parking, and Marta chooses to run only five buses an hour between the stadium and the rail stations while prohibiting the Braves from running their own transportation.

Agreed on all! I read a headline that said Cobb was kicking in some money to make it happen, so that makes me give it a thumbs-down. But not having to go to Turner Field area is ALWAYS a plus. I used to go to church with a lady who lived near there...her home was just scary to me. Scary.

It appears to be a split arrangement but no details yet released. Parking seems to be a major factor however how do you explain a new facility but built with 10,000 few seats than currently offered? That takes "future growth" off the table when justifying the move. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against the move, doesn't bother me one bit actually. I went to a total of "zero" games this year and one last year, that won't change when it's in Cobb. Especially when I can watch from home for free and avoid traffic and idiots.

Its planned location is right by our old office at the Atrium building off Herodian Way.

I COULD NOT AGREE MORE! I know everybody loves the experience of being there, blah blah blah, but I checked ticket prices because I was gonna take 6yo nephew this year, and they are outrageous for seats that aren't in nosebleed! Watching on TV, you get multiple camera views, replays, close-up shots, and you can get food and go to the bathroom without much effort. Plus the traffic and idiots as you mentioned when you go to the game.

10,000 fewer seats? Really? They couldn't figure out how to stuff a few more in there to at least make it LOOK like they're going for progress? Whatev.

I'm sure my mother hates what it will do to traffic in that area, not to mention the wife who goes from Hiram to Peachtree Industrial every day.

Oh well.

Wonder how long it will take for the Cumberland area to be like turner field area? The thugs will have to relocate. I used to travel 285/75 in that area where they plan to build, it was a PITA then, can't imagine what it will be like after the build.

On a brighter note...closer to the Silver Comet Airport :laugh

I like watching ballgames at home too but the "fan experience" at Turner Field is zero. The only experience you have is with the APD when a drunk or young punks are out on the prowl. I never felt safe there and thank God they are moving. This stadium is supposed to have state of the art technology deals with wi-fi, big screens, eating venues, tourist attractions, tailgating areas, safe parking (hahaha) etc to make the "fan experience" a whole lot better. Many other ballparks make Turner Field look pathetic and now Atlanta is going to have a better facility that will attract bigger and better things. I think it is a win win for everyone.

Details are still sketchy, but Reed leaked that Cobb's part in it would be in the neighborhood of $450 million in bonds issued by the Cobb-Marietta Coliseum and Exhibit Hall Authority. The Braves would kick in the rest up to and over the $672 million price tag. So Cobb would own the stadium. No details on the lease and profit sharing arrangements or what if any guarantees the Braves have made to the county. It is also unknown what infrastructure costs will be.

No ink has been signed so I figure papers were filed today in an attempt to stop it. But as I stated in the airport post, if the back room deals have already been made and the handshake complete then it's all but done. If the projected cost is $672M then expect it to be well over $1B by the time the first pitch is thrown. I'll enjoy that from the comfort of my recliner.

Can they still be called "Atlanta Braves" ? :D

The zip code and address will still be Atlanta.

Back in the early 80's I lived in that area where the stadium is going.
(I'm from Smyrna, so in a way, I have always lived somewhat in the area)
At that time we lived in unincorporated Cobb County, neither in the city limits of Smyrna or Marietta.
Our mailing address was Atlanta, GA and our mail was delivered out of the Smyrna Post Office.
Go figure, unincorporated Cobb, ATL address and the Smyrna USPO handled the mail.

I don't care either way. I don't go to professional sport games, way too many over paid babies, causing everything else to be over priced.

I've been to one game at Turner Field, only because I won the tickets. Fourteen rows back from the home bench but was so crammed into the seats I was miserable the whole game, not to mention it was in the upper 90's. Never been to a Falcon's game though. For me it's a lot more fun to go see the Rome Braves.

Sister lives in Rome, so we go to a lot of those games. 6yo nephew and I went to one Berry game this year, but his games conflicted with the rest of them. But college ball is way fun to me.

And we're going to see you at a game this year.
