Manatees are gentile but incredibly stupid animals. Freezing has always been a problem. When the weather warms mid Winter for a few days they go up Crane Creek and other small streams to sun themselves in the shallow water. We used to take jon boats up there to herd them back into the Indian River estuary if near freezing temps were expected overnight following a sunny warm snap.

ETA: Now you would be arrested for harassing an endangered animal.

My son has not done an Indian River manatee trip in years, but I believe they were taken off the endangered list a while back. And you are totally correct on their stupidity. I remember more than one boat trip that just getting out into the ocean from shallower areas and people literally would be pushing them out of the way and toward the others. They would just come up to the boat and just float there....forever and you really did not want to hit them! (endangered definitely at the time and we were scared young adults not looking to go to jail over a manatee.)
