They can help your house stay cooler in this weather by pulling heat out of the attic. Just make sure you have adequate ventilation in the attic so the fan doesn't suck conditioned air out of the house.

It might not actually save you money because you're paying to run the fan, but for your goal of making the house cooler, it makes sense.
Exactly what my husband says. It definitely made a difference this morning. The a/c was actually cutting off. This afternoon it is not turning off as much, but the house is staying at 75. It is not creeping up.

My understanding is that most home AC units are only designed to cool about 15 to 20 degrees from the outside air temp. We have ours set at 80 and it's cycling like normal. With ceiling fans and a box fan, it's very conforable........but we be nekkid also! lol
We have our ceiling fans going, no box fans. How high are your ceilings? I think that is some of the reason it seems so hard to cool, but I am not sure. :dunno

8 ft. And this is an old house, built around 1940 is what I could find. But we just had new insulation blown into the attic on Monday also.
We have very high ceilings. :( I think that it hurts with heating and a/c.

Just the oppisite. That's why old southern home usually have 12 ft ceilings. But they are harder to heat during the winter.

Weird. Tell my why. :))
Our bedroom is 12, dining, kitchen, guest rooms, bathrooms 10, and LR and Foyer are cathedral.

You have a newer house so I wouldnt think you would need a whole house fan. I only see those in older homes. You should look into the normal attic fans that kick on when the attic temp hits a certain predetermined temperature. I would think having higher ceilings would be a plus since heat rises but I may be wrong. I would check the insulation and make sure the installed attic vents are working properly. You shouldnt have cooling issues in a house of that age.

Gotta remember, they did not have AC back then. At best they had ceiling fans. The design used natural convection of raising warm air out high windows to draw cooler air in the low windows.

Today's design just traps hot air in the house.

But going nekkid helps keep you cool! Wanna see pic's? lol

Husband installed an attic fan today. (It has a temp gauge that turns it on.) It did seem to help.

You put that poor man into an attic to work today? That sucks. Does he need me to come over with my massage table?

I have a whole house fan and I'm not a fan (pun intended). The only time we use it is when we want to air the house out. It sucks in more humidity and dust than anything else.

But a better long-term solution is to insulate to R-38 and install a continuous ridge vent.

When it's cooler out. ;D

We have continuous ridge vent and our ac has been struggling over here.

Okay, I've decided that I'm the only one that has absolutely no idea of that goes on in the attic in our house. The only time I go up there is when we get the Christmas decorations down and when we put them up... :dunno

I don't actually go up there! That is what a husband and son are for.

But the fact that you know about fans and vents and the other stuff is pretty impressive... :CLAP
